Chairman of Indian Overseas Congress<\/a>, Sam Pitroda<\/a>, on Wednesday explained Congress<\/a>‘ rationale behind wealth redistribution<\/a> in a country amid ongoing debates on the issue.
While speaking to ANI, he called it an interesting concept while referring to the US law and said that it is a policy which is not in the interest of super-rich<\/a> but in the interest of the people. <\/p>\n

“In America<\/a>, there is an inheritance tax<\/a>. If one has $100 million worth of wealth and when he dies he can only transfer probably 45% to his children, 55% is grabbed by the government. That’s an interesting law. It says you in your generation, made wealth and you are leaving now, you must leave your wealth for the public<\/a>, not all of it, half of it, which to me sounds fair,” Pitroda said. <\/p>\n

“In India<\/a>, you don’t have that. If somebody is worth 10 billion and he dies, his children get 10 billion and the public gets nothing…So these are the kind of issues people will have to debate and discuss. I don’t know what the conclusion would be at the end of the day but when we talk about redistributing wealth, we are talking about new policies<\/a> and new programs that are in the interest of the people and not in the interest of super-rich only,” he further added.<\/p>\n

Wealth inequality<\/strong>
The controversy on wealth distribution among poor and rich erupted from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s announcement on April 6 when he said that his party aimed to conduct a comprehensive financial and institutional survey to assess wealth distribution across various demographics in the country.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Congress manifesto says, \u201cInequality between the rich on the one hand and the poor and middle classes on the other have increased sharply dealing a body blow to the goals of equality, equity, and social and economic justice.\u201d It says the share of national income earned by India’s top one per cent is today at its highest historical levels and is among the highest globally. \u201cThe rise of inequality has been particularly pronounced between 2014 and 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n

Modi slams Congress
<\/strong>Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the Congress tried to extend reservation on the basis of religion and give it to Muslims, and once again accused the party of hatching a “deep conspiracy” to snatch people’s wealth and distribute it among “select” people. Launching a blistering attack on the Congress, Modi also charged that it is difficult to follow one’s faith under the Congress and that even listening to Hanuman Chalisa becomes crime under that party’s rule.<\/div>\n
