This and more in today\u2019s ETtech Top 5.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">Also in this letter:<\/span><br \/><span class=\"subHead\">\u25a0 <\/span>Meta\u2019s profit soars<br \/>\u25a0 Prosus elevates Ashutosh Sharma<br \/>\u25a0 Cred&#8217;s offline \u2018scan and pay\u2019 payments<\/p>\n<hr style=\"border-bottom: solid 1px #979797; margin: 20px 0 14px;\" data-attr-sectionload=\"jsSectionLad_1\"\/>\n<p>Swiggy secures shareholder nod for a potential $1.25-billion IPO<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageHolder\"><\/div>\n<p><em>Sriharsha Majety, MD &amp; group CEO, Swiggy<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Shareholders have greenlit Bengaluru-based <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/startups\/swiggy-secures-shareholder-nod-for-a-potential-1-2-billion-ipo\/articleshow\/109581616.cms\">Swiggy\u2019s initial public offering (IPO) worth $1.25 billion.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">IPO details:<\/span> The company plans to raise Rs 3,750 crore ($450 million) in fresh capital, in addition to an offer-for-sale (OFS) component of up to Rs 6,664 crore ($800 million), according to filings made with the Registrar of Companies.<\/p>\n<p>Swiggy is looking to also pick up about Rs 750 crore from anchor investors in a pre-IPO round.<\/p>\n<p>The special resolution was passed at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) of Swiggy\u2019s shareholders on April 23.<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageHolder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"artimg\" align=\"center\" style=\"width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/img.etimg.com\/photo\/msid-109598268\/swiggy vs zomato comparing valuations apr 2024 graphic ettech.jpg\" alt=\"swiggy vs zomato comparing valuations apr 2024 graphic ettech\" title=\"swiggy vs zomato comparing valuations apr 2024 graphic ettech\"\/><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">Major shareholders: <\/span>Prosus is the <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/startups\/prosus-may-have-promoter-tag-in-swiggys-1-billion-ipo\/articleshow\/107061905.cms\">largest investor in Swiggy with a 33% stake<\/a>, followed by SoftBank. The company\u2019s cofounders Sriharsha Majety, Nandan Reddy and Rahul Jaimini hold 4%, 1.6% and 1.2%, respectively, as per data platform Tracxn. Jaimini left his operational role in 2020 to join another venture, Pesto Tech.<\/p>\n<p>Other shareholders include Accel, Elevation Capital, Meituan, Norwest Venture Partners, Tencent, DST Global, Qatar Investment Authority, Coatue, Alpha Wave Global, Invesco, Hillhouse Capital Group and GIC.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">Valuation markups:<\/span> Invesco, <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/funding\/swiggy-turns-decacorn-closes-700-million-round-led-by-invesco-at-10-7-billion-valuation\/articleshow\/89090338.cms\">which had led Swiggy\u2019s $700 million round<\/a> in January 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/startups\/invesco-marks-swiggy-valuation-at-12-7-billion-up-18-from-last-fundraise\/articleshow\/109157973.cms\">marked up the valuation of the company to $12.7 billion<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Baron Capital had also<a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/startups\/baron-capital-marks-swiggy-valuation-at-12-1-billion-up-13-from-last-fundraise\/articleshow\/108326942.cms\"> increased the company\u2019s fair value<\/a> in its books to $12.1 billion last month.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">FY23 scorecard: <\/span>Swiggy reported a <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/startups\/swiggys-fy23-revenue-grows-45-to-rs-8265-crore-net-loss-expands-15\/articleshow\/107267730.cms\">45% jump in operating revenue for fiscal year ended March 2023<\/a> to Rs 8,265 crore, even as its net loss expanded 15% to Rs 4,179 crore. Total expenses in FY23 were a staggering Rs 12,884 crore, up 34% on year.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"border-bottom: solid 1px #979797; margin: 20px 0 14px;\" data-attr-sectionload=\"jsSectionLad_2\"\/>\n<p>Koo halts salaries; founder says company &#8216;will remain operational&#8217;<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageHolder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"artimg\" align=\"center\" style=\"width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/img.etimg.com\/photo\/msid-109598983\/Koo india.jpg\" alt=\"Koo india\" title=\"Koo india\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Microblogging startup Koo <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/startups\/koo-halts-salary-payments-from-april-will-remain-operational-says-founder\/articleshow\/109597069.cms\">is halting salary payments to employees from April<\/a>, amid a delay in its search for a partner to acquire the company.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">Operations on: <\/span>Cofounder Mayank Bidawatka said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/mayank-bidawatka-028b2a1_i-had-promised-updates-and-heres-another-activity-7189226150538240000-MmcI\/\">in a LinkedIn post<\/a> on Thursday that the firm has done everything to extend its runway so that employees and vendors could get paid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKoo remains operational. It\u2019s very well built and a fully automated product that needs little manual intervention to function. There\u2019s a proud team that stands behind it, irrespective of where they are today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">Tell me more:<\/span> Bidawatka said that the founders \u2013 TaxiForSure founder Aprameya Radhakrishna and himself \u2013 had put in a \u201csubstantial amount\u201d from their personal funds so that salaries for March could be paid to employees.<\/p>\n<p>The company had conducted salary cuts earlier. And the cofounder said future salaries will only be paid once a partnership is concluded. The development was first reported by news website Inc42.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">Hunt for a partner:<\/span> Koo was looking to raise funds or <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/startups\/koo-cofounder-says-in-talks-for-strategic-partnership-as-dailyhunt-eyes-acquisition\/articleshow\/108061920.cms\">tie up with a strategic partner to scale operations<\/a>, cofounder Mayank Bidawatka had first said in September 2023. But the talks have taken longer than expected amid a funding winter.<\/p>\n<p>In February this year, Koo was <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/startups\/microblogging-site-koo-in-talks-for-acquisition-by-verse-innovation\/articleshow\/108076689.cms\">in talks for a potential acquisition by VerSe Innovation<\/a>, the parent firm of news aggregator Dailyhunt and short video platform Josh.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"border-bottom: solid 1px #979797; margin: 20px 0 14px;\" data-attr-sectionload=\"jsSectionLad_3\"\/>\n<p>Meta\u2019s profit spikes, but increased spending spooks investors<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageHolder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"artimg\" align=\"center\" style=\"width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/img.etimg.com\/photo\/msid-109598323\/Meta Platforms.jpg\" alt=\"Meta Platforms\" title=\"Meta Platforms\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Facebook owner Meta said its <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/technology\/meta-reports-surge-in-profit-but-companys-increased-spends-spook-investors\/articleshow\/109581123.cms\">quarterly profit soared last quarter to $12.4 billion <\/a>from $5.71 billion during the same period last year.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">Driving the profit:<\/span> Propelled by a 6% increase in the average price of ads, the Mark Zuckerberg-founded company said total revenue spiked 27% to $36.5 billion, from $28.65 billion. <\/p>\n<p>The company expects second-quarter 2024 total revenue to be in the range of $36.5-39 billion. Its projected expenses will be in the range of $35-40 billion, compared to its earlier guidance of $30-37 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Meta expects full-year 2024 total expenses to be in the range of $96-99 billion, from its prior outlook of $94-99 billion, due to higher infrastructure and legal costs.<\/p>\n<p>Shares of the Facebook and Instagram parent dropped about 15% in extended trade, its market capitalisation plunging to about $1 trillion.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">App performance: <\/span>Meta reported a 7% rise in users across its apps during the quarter with an average of 3.24 billion users in March across its \u201cfamily of apps\u201d \u2014 Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. <\/p>\n<p>The company also said it will no longer disclose user figures specifically for Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Ad impressions delivered across Meta&#8217;s family of apps also increased by 20%.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">Headcount update: <\/span>Meta said its workforce decreased by 10% on-year, in line with the company&#8217;s move for a &#8216;year of efficiency.&#8217; The tech giant said its global workforce now stood at 69,329, slightly more than last quarter, but down from a peak of more than 87,000 employees in 2022.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">AI in focus:<\/span> CEO Mark Zuckerberg told analysts that the focus on AI would \u201cgrow our investment envelope meaningfully before we make much revenue from some of these new products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuilding the leading AI will also be a larger undertaking than the other experiences we&#8217;ve added to our apps and this is likely going to take several years,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"border-bottom: solid 1px #979797; margin: 20px 0 14px;\" data-attr-sectionload=\"jsSectionLad_4\"\/>\n<p>Prosus elevates Ashutosh Sharma to lead India, Southeast Asia market<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageHolder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"artimg\" align=\"center\" style=\"width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/img.etimg.com\/photo\/msid-109598371\/ashutosh sharma large.jpg\" alt=\"ashutosh sharma large\" title=\"ashutosh sharma large\"\/><\/div>\n<p><em>Ashutosh Sharma, head India and Southeast Asia investments, Prosus<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Global technology investor Prosus has <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/technology\/prosus-elevates-ashutosh-sharma-to-lead-india-southeast-asia-market\/articleshow\/109586801.cms\">elevated Ashutosh Sharma to lead its India and Southeast Asia investments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">Tell me more:<\/span> Sharma, who was heading the venture arm of Prosus in India till recently, will now report to the Dutch investment firm\u2019s interim chief executive Ervin Tu.<\/p>\n<p>Sharma joined Prosus in 2016, before which he was at Norwest Venture Partners and Qualcomm Ventures.<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageHolder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"artimg\" align=\"center\" style=\"width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/img.etimg.com\/photo\/msid-109599143\/Prosus.jpg\" alt=\"Prosus\" title=\"Prosus\"\/><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">What next? <\/span>A spokesperson for Prosus said Sharma will lead early and growth-plus opportunities across India and adjacent markets. <\/p>\n<p>An alumnus of IIT-BHU Varanasi, Sharma led the fund\u2019s investment in Swiggy and Meesho. He will look at new investments for Prosus and work closely with portfolio firms like Urban Company, Mensa Brands and others.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">Leadership rejig:<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/technology\/bob-van-dijk-steps-down-as-ceo-board-member-of-prosus-and-naspers\/articleshow\/103747195.cms\">Bob van Djik resigned as Prosus CEO in September last year<\/a> after which Tu was named the interim CEO. Gautam Thakar, previously the CEO of Olx Autos, is head of edtech investments globally.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"border-bottom: solid 1px #979797; margin: 20px 0 14px;\" data-attr-sectionload=\"jsSectionLad_5\"\/>\n<p>Cred launches offline QR code-based \u2018scan and pay\u2019 payments<\/p>\n<div class=\"imageHolder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"artimg\" align=\"center\" style=\"width:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/img.etimg.com\/photo\/msid-109598424\/IMG 2010.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 2010\" title=\"IMG 2010\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Fintech unicorn Cred <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/technology\/cred-launches-offline-qr-code-based-scan-and-pay-payments\/articleshow\/109594582.cms\">has launched offline QR code-based \u2018scan and pay\u2019 payments<\/a> at large format stores and will roll out the solution at select merchant outlets throughout this year.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">Pilots and approval:<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/tech\/startups\/cred-receives-in-principle-approval-from-the-rbi-for-payment-aggregation-business\/articleshow\/109430430.cms\">ET wrote on April 19<\/a> that Cred was running pilots around offline payments and had received in-principle approval from the Reserve Bank of India for an online payment aggregator licence.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">Target customers:<\/span> The product is mostly targeted at merchants who have a large ticket size average transaction, and their customers typically pay with credit cards. The app will also offer the customer rewards against every payment transaction, irrespective of which payment instrument is being used.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">Device options:<\/span> Large merchants in categories such as dining and fashion can apply for this device, which is powered by Razorpay POS and Pine Labs. The terminals can be in the form of a portable device \u2018pocket\u2019 or a \u2018kiosk\u2019 meant for places with heavy footfalls, or a device which displays a dynamic QR code.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"subHead\">UPI momentum: <\/span>The Peak XV Partners-backed startup, which has been pushing its UPI payments feature aggressively, wants its customers to start using the app to scan QR codes at premium retail outlets.
