The university had said earlier that it would expel students who did so. Officers also pepper-sprayed protesters to keep them from taking over a building at the City College of New York; officials at Portland State University shut down the campus after students broke into a library; and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/30\/nyregion\/unc-chapel-hill-protests.html?smid=url-share\" title=\"\">protesters stormed a barricade<\/a> at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Elsewhere, there were signs that disruptions were waning. Police officers put an <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/30\/nyregion\/california-poly-humboldt-protests-arrests.html\" title=\"\">end to an eight-day occupation of an administration building<\/a> at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt. At Brown University, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/30\/us\/brown-divestment-deal.html\" title=\"\">demonstrators agreed to dismantle their encampment<\/a> after administrators said they would vote on divesting funds from companies connected to Israel\u2019s military campaign in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Police officers made scores of new arrests. More than <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/pro-palestinian-encampments-protests.html\" title=\"\">1,000 protesters have been taken into custody<\/a> since the arrests of at least 108 people at Columbia on April 18 kicked off a wave of student protests.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Prosecutors have alerted the judge, Juan Merchan, to four new potential violations, which will be discussed at another hearing on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The court also heard testimony from Keith Davidson, a Beverly Hills lawyer who detailed how he had worked out hush-money payments for his clients, a Playboy model and a porn star, who were trying to sell their claims about sexual encounters with Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Separately,<\/strong> Trump <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6972021\/donald-trump-2024-election-interview\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told Time magazine<\/a> that he would be willing to deploy the military to help deport migrants and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2024\/04\/30\/us\/biden-trump-election-updates\" title=\"\">hedged on the possibility of political violence after the election<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"css-7ad88g e1mu4ftr0\"\/><\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-9ycfei eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-18ae1d36\">Binance founder sentenced to four months in prison<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Changpeng Zhao, the billionaire founder of the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/30\/technology\/binance-founder-changpeng-zhao-sentenced.html\" title=\"\">sentenced on Tuesday to four months in prison<\/a>, a much lighter penalty than other crypto executives have faced since the industry imploded in 2022.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Not long ago, Binance was the most powerful crypto company in the world, processing as much as two-thirds of all transactions, and Zhao stood atop the multitrillion-dollar industry. But Binance also faced investigations by several U.S. agencies into whether Zhao had broken the law to build his empire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Prosecutors had asked for a three-year sentence for Zhao, who pleaded guilty last year to a money-laundering violation.
