Central agencies have raised a red alert for ‘Kallakkadal’ phenomenon along the coastal areas of Kerala<\/a> and southern Tamil Nadu<\/a>. This marks the first time such an alert has been issued by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for this phenomenon in the region.<\/p>\n

What is Kallakkadal phenomenon?<\/h4>\n

The term ‘Kallakkadal’ translates to a sea that comes suddenly like a thief. INCOIS explained that these swells result from strong winds in the southern part of the Indian Ocean, occurring suddenly without any specific indications or warnings, hence the name ‘Kallakkadal’.<\/p>\n

Fishermen to take precautions <\/h5>\n

Officials have urged fishermen and coastal residents to take necessary precautions in response to the alert. A Kerala Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) official said, “Red alert for swell surge warning has been received from NDMA-INCOIS.” The ‘Kallakkadal’ phenomenon is expected to occur from 2:30 am on Saturday to 11:30 pm on Sunday, with the possibility of extremely strong waves, rough seas, and sea incursion during this period.<\/p>\n

Not a Tsunami-Like Event<\/h5>\n

While the situation is serious, officials clarified that it is not a tsunami-like phenomenon. INCOIS had earlier warned of rough seas due to high waves ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 meters during the mentioned period. The agency advised people to securely moor their fishing vessels in the harbor.<\/p>\n

Safety Measures Recommended<\/h5>\n

Authorities, including KSDMA and other weather agencies<\/a>, advised people to stay away from danger zones and intensify safety measures. They suggested maintaining a safe distance between boats to avoid collisions and ensuring the safety of fishing equipment. Trips to the beach and activities at sea should be avoided entirely during this period.<\/p>\n
