They have lost the Blackpool South by-election and more than half of the council seats they were defending.<\/p>\n<p>If results continue like this it could be the party&#8217;s worst-ever local elections.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s still early on though, and there are many more results to come, including most of <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/follow-the-mayoral-election-results-live-here-13125693\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the mayoral election results<\/a>. So far, Conservative Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has held on to his role with a majority of 18,789 (12.3%).<\/p>\n<p>Labour has made gains although there have also been losses in some areas, and many Conservative losses have been falling to smaller parties and independents.<\/p>\n<p>The Greens will probably be most pleased with their performance overnight, having more than doubled their tally of seats in councils that have counted already.<\/p>\n<p>The Lib Dems have maintained council control in <a href=\"https:\/\/election.news.sky.com\/elections\/england-local-councils-2024\/eastleigh-4543\"><strong>Eastleigh<\/strong><\/a>, Hampshire, and <a href=\"https:\/\/election.news.sky.com\/elections\/england-local-councils-2024\/hull-4516\"><strong>Hull<\/strong><\/a>, but otherwise had underwhelming night &#8211; they will be hoping for more as other results come in.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"ui-media-caption\">\n        <span class=\"u-hide-visually\">Image:<\/span><br \/>\n        <span class=\"ui-media-caption__caption-text\">Results and seats from councils declared so far<br \/>\n        <\/span><br \/>\n      <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Labour gained control of four councils in total, including <a href=\"https:\/\/election.news.sky.com\/elections\/england-local-councils-2024\/redditch-4563\"><strong>Redditch <\/strong><\/a>in the West Midlands, and <a href=\"https:\/\/election.news.sky.com\/elections\/england-local-councils-2024\/rushmoor-4569\"><strong>Rushmoor <\/strong><\/a>in Hampshire &#8211; the home of the British Army, which they took directly from the Conservatives.<\/p>\n<p>Rushmoor had never previously been under Labour control in the 50-year history of the council, and had been under Conservative majority control since 2000. They also failed to win key target seats like <a href=\"https:\/\/election.news.sky.com\/elections\/england-local-councils-2024\/harlow-4548\"><strong>Harlow <\/strong><\/a>in Essex.<\/p>\n<p>The Conservatives are at their lowest number of seats ever recorded in <a href=\"https:\/\/election.news.sky.com\/elections\/england-local-councils-2024\/portsmouth-4528\"><strong>Portsmouth <\/strong><\/a>&#8211; Tory minister Penny Mordaunt&#8217;s backyard, and also in <a href=\"https:\/\/election.news.sky.com\/elections\/england-local-councils-2024\/peterborough-4519\"><strong>Peterborough<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They lost 13 seats in Peterborough but Labour only made four gains, with seven seats going to independents, and one each to the Greens and Lib Dems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tories lose Blackpool South with third highest swing since war<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Conservatives <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/labour-wins-blackpool-south-by-election-taking-seat-from-conservatives-13127714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lost the Blackpool South by-election<\/a><\/strong>, with a swing to Labour of 26.3%.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the seventh by-election loss direct to Labour since the last time these same council seats were up in 2021. They had only been above 10% once, in Kingswood earlier this year. They are currently polling 12.4% nationally according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/sky-news-poll-tracker-how-are-political-parties-performing-as-an-election-looms-12903488\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sky News poll tracker<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The result in Blackpool South is consistent with this national polling, and similar to how UKIP performed in the seat in 2015. But a better result may have been expected given the circumstances of the election &#8211; an MP from the governing party forced to resign over corruption issues.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget 2019 electoral coalition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Conservatives are performing worst &#8211; and Labour best &#8211; in areas that voted most strongly to leave the EU in the 2016 referendum.<\/p>\n<p>Labour is also performing stronger in areas with fewer graduates and with more people in working-class occupations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget points to Labour perhaps being able to translate their votes more efficiently to seats in a general election, where it needs to win back many working class, leave voting areas that turned to the Conservatives last time around.<\/p>\n<p>Labour&#8217;s progress looks significant when compared with the last time these seats were up in 2021, as would be expected with the party 20 points ahead in the polls, but if we compare with last year&#8217;s local elections it is more limited.<\/p>\n<p>Among the wards we have results for so far their vote is up more than seven percentage points compared elections<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As well as council elections, electors have been voting for London mayor, nine Combined Authority mayors and for Salford City mayor.<\/p>\n<p>So far, we have the result
