And tents with Palestinian flags stretched out this week across university campuses in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The tensions gripping universities in the United States appear to be spreading to other countries, where student activists have challenged their own schools\u2019 stances on the war in Gaza and ties to Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Demonstrators at several universities in France have put pressure on administrators to more forcefully condemn Israel\u2019s military offense in Gaza and review partnerships with Israeli universities and private donors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Police officers went into Sciences Po on Friday morning to clear out a group of pro-Palestinian protesters who had occupied a campus building overnight, according to a spokesman for the university. The intervention came after a town hall debate about the Gaza war on Thursday at the university \u2014 which counts top politicians, civil servants and business leaders among its alumni \u2014 failed to defuse tensions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The main Paris campus was closed on Friday, the Sciences Po spokesman said. According to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/C6gIn3KoIIU\/?igsh=bTBidDB0c2V5bmVn\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">live video<\/a> shared on Instagram, students sitting in a hall chanted, \u201cWe ask for justice! We get the police!\u201d as officers pulled them out. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Britain, small encampments have begun to spring up at universities in the cities of Bristol, Newcastle and Warwick. And a coalition of students and staff members at University College London put up tents on the campus grounds on Thursday to pressure the school to divest from companies complicit in what they called \u201cthe genocide of Palestinians,\u201d among other demands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe won\u2019t move until the university meets our demands,\u201d a spokesman identified only as Anwar said on Thursday in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/C6eTYYeNrRE\/?igsh=MWQ5M2FuanQ4Yzg1Zg%3D%3Dhttps:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/C6eTYYeNrRE\/?igsh=MWQ5M2FuanQ4Yzg1Zg%3D%3D\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a social media post<\/a>. The university did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A union representing students at Trinity College Dublin said that the university had fined it more than 214,000 euros, about $230,000, for financial losses incurred because of disruptive protests since last September over the war in Gaza, rising student fees and other issues. The university, which is a nonprofit, in a statement cited the \u201cnegative financial impact\u201d of protests blocking visitor access to the Book of Kells, a Medieval religious manuscript held at the university.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Laszlo Molnarfi, president of the students\u2019 union at Trinity College, said in a phone interview that the union could not afford to pay the fine. He called it an attempt at intimidation by the university, adding that the protests would continue.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe will be escalating,\u201d he said. \u201cThe students in Columbia and in the U.S. are an absolute inspiration to all of us here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Australia, encampments have been <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-05-02\/australian-encampment-protests-columbia-university-israel-gaza\/103794882\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">set up at major universities<\/a> in the cities of Adelaide, Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney.
