A sixth worker was seriously injured and in intensive care, local officials said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Girolamo Bentivoglio, chief of firefighters in Palermo, said the workers had breathed in hydrogen sulfide, a gas often present at waste treatment plants that is toxic in high concentrations. Levels were so high at the site where the workers were killed, \u201cthat fatality is immediate,\u201d Mr. Bentivoglio said in a televised interview on RaiNews24, the national broadcaster\u2019s news channel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The accident raised a new round of outrage over the incidence of workplace deaths in Italy. In April, seven workers were killed in an explosion in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/10\/world\/europe\/italy-explosion-hydroelectric-plant.html\" title=\"\">hydroelectric plant near<\/a> Bologna, while five died in Florence during the construction of a supermarket in February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">According to the European statistics agency <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Accidents_at_work_statistics\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Eurostat<\/a>, Italy ranks eighth among European countries in fatal accidents at work, with an incidence of 2.66 per 100,000 employed, which is higher than the European Union average of 1.76, but lower than France\u2019s 3.32.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHad they adopted all the precautions, all the safety measures, including personal protective equipment, we wouldn\u2019t have been faced with this scenario,\u201d Mr. Bentivoglio said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inail.it\/cs\/internet\/comunicazione\/sala-stampa\/comunicati-stampa\/com-stampa-open-data-marzo-2024.html#:~:text=Le%20denunce%20di%20infortunio%20sul%20lavoro%20con%20esito%20mortale%20presentate,due%20in%20pi%C3%B9%20sul%202022.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">According to Inail<\/a>, the National Institute for Insurance Against Accidents at Work, there have been 191 work-related deaths in the first three months of 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe tragedy of Casteldaccia responds to a pattern that has been repeated too often in recent months,\u201d the leaders of three Sicilian trade unions said in a joint statement <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.quotidiano.net\/cronaca\/casteldaccia-morti-intossicati-vino-e01k6ran\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">published by Italian news outlets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The causes of the accident would have to be verified, as well as the responsibilities of the companies involved and the question of whether safety regulations had been complied with, the unions said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While workplace deaths continued to occur, the offices that monitored workplace safety remained understaffed, they added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cSicily once again mourns its dead in the workplace,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a post on the social network X, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy called for \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GiorgiaMeloni\/status\/1787504894212989159\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">full light to be shed<\/a> on this tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Italian president, Sergio Mattarella, said \u201cthis latest unacceptable workplace massacre,\u201d must serve to reiterate the need for common commitment involving unions, entrepreneurs and institutions, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The five workers who died Monday were carrying out work for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amapspa.it\/en\/the-company\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Amap<\/a>, which manages the integrated water service \u2014 including water purification and distribution for residential use, and waste water treatment \u2014 for the City of Palermo and the smaller municipalities that gravitate around the Sicilian capital.
