Now with its own capability for data generation, it need not rely on cost prohibitive commercial satellite imagery from foreign operators who are five or six in number globally.

“Since this is a concentrated market, it is an important capability upgrade within the industry in India. The poor availability and affordability of good quality images is a business case in a developing country,” Prateep Basu, chief executive of SatSure told ET.

So far GalaxEye Space, another Bengaluru-based startup that is building a multisensor imaging satellite for earth observation, has demonstrated the same using a drone with a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) payload while KaleidEO has demonstrated it with an optical payload flying on an aircraft.

The two are considered original equipment manufacturers, a first in the high resolution optical multispectral payload category in India. Another Bengaluru-based Space startup Pixxel focuses on hyperspectral imagery. The images that we released include sharp features of roads, cars, and buildings,” Basu explained. There are different types of earth imaging sensors and payloads that are developed. While Pixxel is into hyperspectral imagery, KaleidEO is into high-resolution optical and multispectral imagery, and GalaxEye is developing SAR.

“Between the three of us, we’re completing the entirety of the spectrum of payloads that can be developed in earth imaging and all of us are Indian private Space companies, so this is a massive change in the last five years before which there was no private sector capability in this domain,” he said.

KaleidEO collected 10,000 images during aerial testing of its payload which will be made available soon for evaluation by different research agencies in the next few days. The applications for these images range from agriculture lending, urban planning, infrastructure, assets monitoring and strategic planning for the government.

SatSure is a player in the downstream applications of the Indian Space ecosystem. It translates huge volumes of satellite images into insights around cropping patterns, correlation with weather impact, and climate impact at individual farm level.

They integrated this with government-provided digital land record information and helped banks in digital lending for farmers. The banks don’t have to physically visit the farms. SatSure’s investors include HDFC bank, ICICI bank, and TransUnion CIBIL credit bureau.

Source link

KaleidEO Space Systems, a Bengaluru-based satellite asset operating startup owned by SatSure Analytics India, recently became one of the few private Indian companies to design and develop a high-resolution optical earth observation payload from scratch, which was successfully aerial tested.
