Unicorn sightings become rare as VCs shun that leap of faith<\/p>\n

While funding for late-stage startups has picked up, early to mid-stage companies emerging as breakout firms are yet to pick up<\/a>, several venture investors and founders told us. <\/p>\n

What\u2019s happening: <\/span>A fintech founder said the ‘leap of faith capital’ is missing as some of the largest investors are still backing established startups through new funding or secondary deals ahead of potential IPOs. Another fund manager added that he\u2019s still going through the same list of companies to evaluate before writing a bigger cheque.<\/p>\n

\"Rare<\/div>\n

Quote unquote: <\/span>\u201cLarge investors like SoftBank and Tiger Global are the ones who take a series C or a series D company to unicorn status and help them scale really fast\u2026. This kind of investment is yet to be seen even..\u201d a growth-stage fintech entrepreneur said.<\/p>\n

Data decoded:<\/span> According to data from Venture Intelligence, ten late-stage deals were closed in April compared to four in 2023. The amount invested in these deals stood at $410 million as against $109 million during the same period a year ago. This includes secondary share sales.<\/p>\n

Rare unicorn:<\/span> So far, only two unicorns emerged this year \u2014 Perfios<\/a> and Krutrim<\/a> \u2014 while the number was the same for the whole of 2023. This is a stark contrast compared to 24 and 47 unicorns in 2022 and 2021, respectively.<\/p>\n

Tata Electronics begins chip export to partners <\/p>\n

Tata Group\u2019s Tata Electronics has begun exporting some semiconductor chips<\/a> through a pilot packaging line that has been set up in its Bengaluru research and development unit to service partners based in Japan, the US and Europe, sources told us.<\/p>\n

Driving the news:<\/span> The development comes as the company is readying to operationalise its chip packaging unit in Assam along with a $10 billion fab in Dholera, Gujarat.<\/p>\n

Some of these chips are also being exported for testing and feedback from select clients of the Tata Group, according to sources.<\/p>\n

Quote, unquote:<\/span> \u201cTata Electronics has packaged chips there (Bengaluru) which they are sending to customers right now outside the country. They have multiple partners and are expanding their customer base. Some of these (products) are still in the pilot stage,\u201d a source told us.<\/p>\n

The big picture:<\/span> The Tata group has planned two semiconductor plants \u2014 a foundry and a chip packaging unit at Dholera in Gujarat and Morigaon in Assam, respectively. The Dholera chip foundry, being made in collaboration with Taiwan\u2019s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC)-, has a planned capacity of up to 50,000 wafer starts per month.<\/p>\n

Hexaware acquires Softcrylic; boosts its data and analytics capabilities:<\/span> Carlyle Group-backed Hexaware Technologies has acquired Softcrylic<\/a>, a Minneapolis-based data consulting firm. While Hexaware didn\u2019t disclose the financials of the deal, the acquisition would boost the mid-tier IT firm\u2019s data and analytics capabilities, said the company in a statement.<\/p>\n
