Cloud computing<\/a>, security<\/a> and content delivery<\/a> services company Akamai Technologies<\/a> may set up edge computing<\/a> facilities in cities like Delhi<\/a>, Bengaluru<\/a> and Hyderabad<\/a> by the end of the year as part of its global compute<\/a> business push, its global chief executive Tom Leighton told ET.<\/p>\n

\u201cAkamai is targeting Gecko (Generalised Edge Compute) sites in Bangalore, Delhi, and Hyderabad to go along with the core sites that are already deployed in Chennai and Mumbai. We are working with our current customers to evaluate their needs as we expand our platform,\u201d Leighton who was on a recent India<\/a> visit said.<\/p>\n

The company, which has 25 core compute and storage sites across the world, announced in February that, in the first phase of the Gecko project, it aims to embed compute with support for virtual machines (VM) into 100 cities by the end of the year. The initiative is part of Akamai\u2019s multi-year strategy to become a key platform in enterprise multi-cloud environments.<\/p>\n

Edge computing runs workloads closer to users, devices, and sources of data, enabling lower latency speeds. Leighton highlighted that India is a large market with many population centres, and customers seek to have compute instances for their applications close to the end users, making it a good candidate for this project.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you look at the 100 locations where we\u2019ll be supporting VMs by the end of the year, there’ll be several in India,\u201d Leighton said, adding that India would likely have the second highest number of such sites after the US. <\/p>\n

Akamai\u2019s revenue for the fiscal year ended December 2023 was nearly $4 billion, growing 5% year-over-year. Compute grew the fastest at 24% year-over-year, adding about half a billion in revenue, compared to 14% growth for security while revenue from content delivery network services dipped by 8%. The company had given a 20% growth guidance for the compute vertical for 2024.<\/p>\n

While cloud security is still its biggest vertical, Leighton said the company is also reimagining itself as a major player in the cloud computing space and India is a \u2018real force\u2019 for this.\u201cOur compute customers \u2013 the biggest segment is in Asia Pacific at large, and India (is) a leader there,\u201d Leighton said.<\/p>\n

Parimal Pandya, senior vice president and managing director – Asia Pacific and Japan, Akamai<\/a> Technologies, said that in India, the company works with some of the largest video and OTT (over the top) providers, retail and e-commerce companies, airlines, financial institutions, major government entities, IT services companies, and increasingly critical infrastructure organisations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are continuing to invest aggressively in our go-to-market functions so we can reach out to the fast-growing ecosystem of tech companies, digital natives, in tech, e-commerce, instant delivery,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Akamai globally has over 9,800 employees, of which India’s headcount is over 2,500. It provides its services to Indian players including Hotstar<\/a>, Matrimony.com, Rooter<\/a>, Yatra<\/a>, Times Internet<\/a>, Zolvit, FreshToHome, and Malayala Manorama.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
