{"id":44772,"date":"2024-05-07T07:08:11","date_gmt":"2024-05-07T07:08:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/07\/boeing-delays-first-ever-astronaut-launch-due-to-valve-problem\/"},"modified":"2024-05-07T07:08:11","modified_gmt":"2024-05-07T07:08:11","slug":"boeing-delays-first-ever-astronaut-launch-due-to-valve-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/07\/boeing-delays-first-ever-astronaut-launch-due-to-valve-problem\/","title":{"rendered":"Boeing delays first ever astronaut launch due to valve problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/05\/768x432\/skynews-nasa-astronauts-butch-wilmore_6545942.jpg?20240507065021&amp;fit=768,432&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Boeing delays first ever astronaut launch due to valve problem\" title=\"Boeing delays first ever astronaut launch due to valve problem\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component-name=\"sdc-article-body\" data-highlight-intro=\"true\">\n<p>Boeing has called off its first-ever astronaut launch at the final moment after discovering a valve problem in the Atlas V rocket.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The two <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/nasa-5932\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA<\/a><\/strong> test pilots had just strapped into <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/boeing-7103\">Boeing<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s Starliner capsule at Cape Canaveral space station for a flight to the International Space Station on Monday night (US EST) when the countdown stopped &#8211; two hours before the planned lift-off.<\/p>\n<p>It was the latest delay for Boeing&#8217;s first crew flight, on hold for years because of capsule trouble.<\/p>\n<p>The Atlas V rocket is manufactured by the United Launch Alliance, which includes Boeing and Lockheed Martin.<\/p>\n<p>United Launch Alliance&#8217;s chief executive Tory Bruno said the most recent delay may have been caused by an oxygen pressure-relief valve on the upper stage of the rocket that started fluttering open and closed, creating a loud buzz.<\/p>\n<p>The valve may have exceeded its 200,000 lifetime cycles which means it will have to be replaced, pushing the launch into next week, Mr Bruno said.<\/p>\n<p>In an update, NASA said the launch will take place no earlier than Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Bruno said similar valve issues had occurred in previous years on other Atlas rockets launching satellites and these were resolved by turning the valves off and back on.<\/p>\n<p>But the company has stricter flight rules for astronaut flights, prohibiting valve recycling when a crew is on board.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And so we stayed with the rules and the procedures, and scrubbed as a result,&#8221; Mr Bruno said at a news conference.<\/p>\n<p>It meant the two-member crew of NASA astronauts Barry &#8220;Butch&#8221; Wilmore, 61, and Sunita &#8220;Suni&#8221; Williams, 58, had to be removed from the capsule by technicians, before they were whisked away from the launch complex to await a second flight attempt when the issue is resolved.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"ui-media-caption\">\n        <span class=\"u-hide-visually\">Image:<\/span><br \/>\n        <span class=\"ui-media-caption__caption-text\">NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore, left, and Suni Williams heading to board Boeing&#8217;s Starliner capsule before the launch was called off. Pic: AP<br \/>\n        <\/span><br \/>\n      <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>NASA&#8217;s commercial crew programme manager Steve Stich added: &#8220;We&#8217;re taking it one step at a time, and we&#8217;re going to launch when we&#8217;re ready and fly when it&#8217;s safe to do so.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Starliner&#8217;s first test flight without a crew failed to reach the space station in 2019 and Boeing had to repeat the flight.
