Bengaluru-based people+ai, an initiative of non-profit EkStep Foundation<\/a>, announced here on Tuesday a partner consortium of 24 organisations aligned on joining the Open Cloud Compute<\/a> (OCC) project. These companies include American semiconductor company Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and cloud company Oracle<\/a>. These partner organisations will act as providers in this compute stack or customers who have a growing need for compute. <\/p>\n

These also include technology providers, and manufacturing service firms among others like Von Neumann AI<\/a>, Vigyan Labs<\/a>, Portean Cloud, Dell Technologies, Nasscom, Dixon Technologies, NeevCloud, Tata Communications, Tecnotree, Cloud Computing Innovation Council of India, TIE Bangalore, Neural HQ, eSamudaay, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, the Open Network for Digital Commerce, E2E Networks Limited, G42, DesiCloud, IBM, Science &Technology Entrepreneurs Park, Step, Emerging Open Tech Foundation, and OnebyZeroGrit. . <\/p>\n

OCC is a network of interoperable micro data centres in the country. According to this model, India needs 10,000 micro data centers<\/a> to build its compute power. This network would bring compute power<\/a> closer to users, enabling faster processing, lower latency, and stronger data sovereignty. <\/p>\n

Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani<\/a> who co-founded EkStep Foundation, held a closed door session with representatives of more than 20 organisations on doing the groundwork to create a compute ecosystem<\/a> in India, importantly creation of a single and open interface for providers and customers of computing infrastructure. <\/p>\n

Nilekani said, \u201cIndia\u2019s approach to building technology at scale is unique. We have successfully unbundled the building blocks to create population-scale digital public infrastructure for identity, payments, and education. We see that India\u2019s ideas for technology are being recognised globally. I believe it is now time to rebundle and make AI work to empower every individual and identify AI use cases unique to India. AI will help reduce barriers and personalise at scale.\u201d<\/p>\n

The interconnected micro-cloud computing infrastructure aims to unite numerous independent providers on a single network, enhancing their discoverability and utilisation. Users of this infrastructure would have access to computing power and related services from many providers. A few large data centres currently dominate India. By creating a network of providers, it can ensure that compute resources<\/a> become more accessible, and more tailored to specific local needs. Pramod Pramod Varma, chief technology officer, EkStep Foundation, said, \u201cTwenty four technology partners<\/a> are collaborating to architect a compute ecosystem critical for India\u2019s digital growth<\/a>. Alignment from an elite list of partners is an indication of their conviction to solve some of the hardest problems faced by our country.”<\/p>\n

The OCC project<\/a> acts as a catalyst in democratising access to cloud compute<\/a> for common good, he said. It will enable many micro compute providers, potentially in the hundreds, to unite and create a mega compute network, he added. “As Nandan once said, micro is the new mega,\u201d he quipped. <\/p>\n

Tanvi Lall, director of strategy, people+ai, EkStep Foundation, said, \u201cJust like energy sources, compute resources come in diverse forms. Over the next few years, demand for compute will go up due to increased digitalisation and AI, and the global cloud compute market is expected to triple in size. Through OCC, we are taking a digital public infrastructure approach to unlocking access to compute at scale.”<\/p>\n

Shailender Kumar, senior vice president, Oracle India said, \u201cOCC can benefit from Oracle\u2019s distributed cloud capabilities like speeding up project execution, providing greater transparency, delivering enterprise-grade efficiency and unlocking innovation through AI and analytics, in customer data centers or on the public cloud.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Jaya Jagadish, country head, AMD India, said that they are well positioned to address the demands of emerging technologies with the company’s GPUs and APUs. <\/p>\n

“We can offer optimised performance for a diverse array of workloads that OCC partners can leverage to their advantage. In the coming decade, the technologies that will take the lead will be heterogeneous computing for specialised workloads such as AI, machine learning and high-performance computing. Edge computing will gain prominence for IoT devices, while cloud and data centre capabilities will continue to expand to handle large-scale data workloads,” she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
