People+ai, an initiative of Nandan Nilekani<\/a>\u2019s EkStep Foundation, unveiled its vision for the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in India<\/a>, called “Adbhut India<\/a>” (Amazing India) along with the launch of Open Cloud Compute (OCC) project.The project aims to build a platform for AI-based startups to discover, demonstrate and disseminate population-scale<\/a> AI use cases for India.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndia’s advantage is our population and their aspirations. We have to build it (solutions) at scale and innovate frugally to dramatically reduce cost of AI\u2026otherwise we cannot deliver to a billion population if we cannot deliver it at one rupee per transaction,\u201d said India\u2019s technology billionaire Nilekani addressing a room of startup founders and investors at the Bengaluru International Centre.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdbhut India is becoming the AI use case<\/a> capital of the world,\u201d added Nilekani, cofounder and currently also the non-executive chairman of Infosys.<\/p>\n

Nilekani also pointed that lot of surveys show that countries like India will be more positive towards AI than the western countries because they are worried about problems around data.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Doomsday prophets are essentially protectionists because they don’t want others to build models and make all the money for themselves. That’s not how it’s going to be here (in India) but (we will) open it up\u2026India has built great technology and people have adopted it. We have seen that time and again in the last 15 years,\u201d he further said.<\/p>\n

According to Nilekani, if startups can take advantage of the population to build frugal innovation, leverage the aspirations of Indians giving solutions that can make a difference to their lives \u201cyou are going to have an explosion\u201d.At the event, people+ai partnered 24 organisations aligned on joining the OCC project, a network of interoperable micro data centres in the country. The event also featured a display of AI-powered community initiatives led by prominent figures including Nikhil Kumar (Setu), Jagadish Babu (EkStep Foundation), Charu Chadha (Rockefeller Foundation), Sunayana Sitaram (Microsoft Research), and Rahul Deora (Fynd).<\/p>\n

OCC aims to establish an open network for computing resources, addressing the growing demand for AI infrastructure while fostering healthy competition within the market.<\/p>\n

Tanuj Bhojwani, head of people+ai, also encouraged the use-case-driven approach to developing and implementing AI in India.<\/p>\n

He believes that India\u2019s unique strengths are a large digitally connected young population and robust public digital infrastructure which can act as a springboard for impactful AI solutions.<\/p>\n

Bhojwani also said that India needs AI more than any other country in the world.<\/p>\n

Father of India\u2019s most ambitious unique identity project – Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) or Aadhaar \u2013 Nilekani, along with wife Rohini Nilekani (Chairperson of Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies) and Shankar Maruwada set up EkStep Foundation in 2015 as a not-for-profit effort to create a learner centric, technology-based platform to build learning opportunities for children in India.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
