{"id":46392,"date":"2024-05-08T22:39:49","date_gmt":"2024-05-08T22:39:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/08\/antiwar-protest-camp-in-dublin-is-dismantled-after-college-agrees-to-divest\/"},"modified":"2024-05-08T22:39:49","modified_gmt":"2024-05-08T22:39:49","slug":"antiwar-protest-camp-in-dublin-is-dismantled-after-college-agrees-to-divest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/08\/antiwar-protest-camp-in-dublin-is-dismantled-after-college-agrees-to-divest\/","title":{"rendered":"Antiwar Protest Camp in Dublin Is Dismantled After College Agrees to Divest"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1050\" height=\"549\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/static01.nyt.com\/images\/2024\/05\/08\/multimedia\/08ireland-fvkm\/08ireland-fvkm-facebookJumbo.jpg?resize=1050,549&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Antiwar Protest Camp in Dublin Is Dismantled After College Agrees to Divest\" title=\"Antiwar Protest Camp in Dublin Is Dismantled After College Agrees to Divest\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Students who oppose the war in Gaza began dismantling their protest camp at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland on Wednesday evening, after the institution agreed to divest from three Israeli companies listed by the United Nations for their links to settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Trinity said that it would move to divest as soon as next month, and that its endowment fund would also seek to divest from investments in other Israeli companies in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe fully understand the driving force behind the encampment on our campus, and we are in solidarity with the students in our horror of what is happening in Gaza,\u201d the college said in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tcd.ie\/news_events\/articles\/2024\/encampment-in-trinity\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a statement<\/a> released on Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe abhor and condemn all violence and war, including the atrocities of October 7th, the taking of hostages and the continuing ferocious and disproportionate onslaught in Gaza,\u201d it added. \u201cThe humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the dehumanisation of its people is obscene.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The statement was approved by the college\u2019s board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Trinity\u2019s protest, which began five days ago and had remained peaceful, was organized by the student union and its branch of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, or B.D.S., movement. The demonstration emerged as students across Europe staged pro-Palestinian sit-ins and protests against antisemitism <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/07\/us\/europe-universities-protesters-encampments.html?searchResultPosition=1\" title=\"\">at other universities<\/a> on the continent, taking a similar approach to their counterparts in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Jenny Maguire, the incoming president of Trinity\u2019s student union, contrasted the calm atmosphere in the college\u2019s Fellow\u2019s Square, where students were already taking down flags and tents in anticipation of the statement\u2019s release, to the violence at some U.S. universities, where <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/30\/nyregion\/city-college-harlem-arrests.html?searchResultPosition=8\" title=\"\">police<\/a> were deployed <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/03\/us\/columbia-nemat-shafik-video.html?searchResultPosition=4\" title=\"\">to clear some occupied buildings<\/a> amid antiwar protests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe college was determined that it would be an example going forward,\u201d Ms. Maguire said on Wednesday evening. \u201cIt refused to follow the U.S. example of bringing police in and made it clear that it would not pursue anything like that here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Prof. Eoin O\u2019Sullivan, who led the college\u2019s negotiation team, said, \u201cI think the negotiations were very productive and very fruitful, and I\u2019d compliment the students for their part in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Support for the Palestinian cause is strong in Ireland, where many people compare Israel\u2019s military occupation of Palestinian territories to centuries of British colonialism in their own country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ireland is also, along with Spain, one of the strongest supporters of the Palestinian cause in the European Union. Last month, the prime ministers of both governments, Simon Harris and Pedro S\u00e1nchez, said they would recognize a state of Palestine \u201cwhen the time is right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Protesting students at Trinity said they were pleased that the college had met their demands, which included the establishment of a special working group to consider its future involvement with Israeli companies, academic institutions and student exchanges. The college has also undertaken a plan to fund tuition and accommodation for eight students from Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This week\u2019s protest had forced the college to shut down the world-famous <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/28\/world\/europe\/dublin-trinity-library-restoration.html\" title=\"\">Book of Kells<\/a> exhibition, where some of Ireland\u2019s most ancient and valuable books are stored \u2014 one of the college\u2019s main sources of outside revenue \u2014 along with college libraries and other facilities. About one million tourists pay to visit the Kells exhibition every year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Professor O\u2019Sullivan said the review of Trinity\u2019s ties with Israel and the larger Middle East would most likely follow the model of a recent working group on the college\u2019s own colonial legacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One main recommendation was to rename a college library formerly named after the philosopher Bishop George Berkeley, a renowned Trinity graduate who was a slave owner during his years in the American colonies.
