Maldives foreign minister<\/a> Moosa Zameer on Thursday indicated the Muizzu government<\/a>‘s willingness to work with India amid external affairs minister S Jaishankar<\/a>‘s emphasis that bilateral ties<\/a> were based on mutual interests and reciprocal sensitivity.<\/p>\n

The two sides, during Jaishankar-Zameer meeting, discussed the state of various India-funded projects in Maldives. Each side presented respective viewpoints on the projects that are developmental in nature and scope, sources informed ET<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Zameer’s visit to India amid anti-India rhetoric<\/a> in Maldives is a signal that neighbours are trying to arrive at a working relationship, sources explained. After resounding victory in parliamentary elections<\/a>, the Muizzu administration may want to set aside rhetoric and work with India, which has been the first responder to crises in Maldives since its independence, sources said.<\/p>\n

In his remarks, Zameer sought to address some of India’s concerns and said his country’s government was “taking proper action to make sure” that people of the island nation do not make derogatory remarks against India and its leader again.<\/p>\n

“We have said that it’s not the stand of the government. We believe that it shouldn’t have been done. We are taking proper action to make sure that this doesn’t get repeated. There has been a misunderstanding on social media. The governments of Maldives and India understand what has happened and we have passed that stage now,” Zameer said.<\/p>\n

In January this year, a diplomatic row<\/a> erupted after Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/a>‘s Lakshadweep visit. The PM had shared snorkeling pictures from the Indian archipelago. In reaction to the images, three deputy ministers of the Maldivian government posted derogatory remarks on X. Following the row, Maldives suspended the three ministers.MEA<\/a> spokesperson Randheer Jaiswal told media that Jaishankar held extensive discussions with Zameer on “bilateral relationship and regional security issues<\/a>“. The two ministers discussed development partnership and ongoing capacity building<\/a> and training initiatives. Jaishankar noted that as far as India was concerned, these were articulated in terms of our neighbourhood first policy and SAGAR vision<\/a>.On withdrawal of Indian military personnel from Maldives, Jaiswal said both sides have been working together to ensure continued operation of the Indian aviation platforms that provide humanitarian and medical evacuation services to the people of the island nation.<\/div>\n
