The Supreme Court<\/a> in its order issuing a interim bail<\/a> to Delhi Chief Minister<\/a> Arvind Kejriwal, said that the Aam Aadmi Party<\/a> leader is not a threat to the society.<\/p>\n

“Arvind Kejriwal does not have any criminal antecedents and he is not a threat to the society,” the SC said in its order. Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate<\/a> on March 21 relating to alleged corruption and money laundering<\/a> in the formulation and execution of now-scrapped excise policy for 2021-22 in Delhi.<\/p>\n

“Grant of an interim bail to Kejriwal will not be treated as an expression of opinion on merits of case against him,” SC said.<\/p>\n

The apex court noted that while serious accusations have been made against the AAP’s National Convenor but he has not been convicted. “Holistic and libertarian view is justified in view of the Lok Sabha elections<\/a>,” SC said.<\/p>\n

“He shall be bound by the statement made on his behalf that he shall not sign official files unless it is required and necessary for obtaining clearance\/ approval of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi,” SC said.”He will not make any comment with regard to his role in the present case; and will not interact with any of the witnesses and\/or have access to any official files connected with the case,” the top court said.<\/p>\n

Kejriwal bail conditions

Kejriwal, as part of bail conditions, cannot visit the CM’s office and Delhi Secretariat. He has been asked to furnish bail bonds of Rs 50,000 with one surety of like amount for release from Tihar jail<\/a>, where he is currently lodged.<\/p>\n

SC\u2019s bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta said Kejriwal will have to surrender and go back to jail on June 2.<\/p>\n

The court denied senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi’s plea, representing Kejriwal, for extending the interim bail until June 5. June 1 marks the end of the seven-phase elections, with vote counting scheduled for June 4.<\/p>\n

Observing that granting Kejriwal interim bail for 21 days will not make much of a difference, the bench said the ED’s Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) was registered in August 2022 while the chief minister was arrested on March 21 this year.<\/p>\n

“He (Kejriwal) was out there for one-and-a-half-years. He could have been arrested earlier or after but nothing such thing happened,” the bench told ED.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
