Guwahati: Manipur<\/a> chief minister N Biren singh<\/a> said efforts are on for constitution of a Special Police Team to identify new settlements, undertake biometrics<\/a> of illegal migrants<\/a> detected.<\/p>\n

Talking to mediapersons on Sunday in Imphal he said that as per the law of the land, illegal migrants will be deported back following the due process of law.Government will ensure that indigenous people<\/a> are protected, and that illegal migration is checked.<\/p>\n

The chief minister said that due to the current civil war in Myanmar<\/a> a large number of people have been displaced. Many are entering Manipur<\/a> illegally due to this. Around 5801 illegal Myanmar migrants have been detected in Kamjong district till date. 15 have expired due to natural causes 359 have returned to Myanmar.<\/p>\n

Currently, 5457 illegal Myanmar migrants are in the district. These 5457 migrants are taking shelter in 8 villages in designated camps<\/a> which are located far from the local habitation to prevent mixing with local people.<\/p>\n

He added that village local committee is mostly managing the accommodation and maintenance of these designated camps with ration provided by District Administration. The migrants are provided identity cards by the District Administration<\/a> and headcount is done every alternate day.<\/p>\n

As per reports received, the migrants are keen to go back to Myanmar as cultivation season has started but they have become hesitant due to bombing by Myanmar army in the past few days.The chief minister informed that immediate action has been taken by the Kamjong District Administration<\/a> and Police by undertaking biometrics, securing the designated camps and providing humanitarian relief. Urgent action decided in meeting chaired by Chief Secretary on
10 May 2024 regarding Kamjong district.Biometrics to be immediately captured and uploaded on MHA<\/a> portal for 284 illegal Myanmar migrants in the district whose biometrics have not been captured yet. Re-verification of all the migrants in the designated camps will be done by district administration at the earliest.<\/p>\n

Police Department<\/a> will strengthen the security deployment<\/a> in the district, especially in and around the designated camps. The illegal migrants will be deported back to Myanmar by district administration, as and when situation improves in Myanmar.<\/p>\n

Singh said that identifying Nodal Officers (Both Civil and Police) in 5 districts \u2013 Ukhrul, Kamjong, Tengnoupal, Chandel and Churachandpur for the purpose of keeping vigil on influx of illegal migrants, identify any new settlements and capture biometrics to upload on MHA portal is ordered. “I urge the people of the State not to panic or spread false rumors. I appeal for understanding from the public as relief is being provided on humanitarian grounds”.<\/p>\n

The chief minister said, “We have come across certain news articles which has urged India to halt the deportation<\/a> of Myanmar refugees. This organization does not have a clear understanding of the ground reality in Manipur. We are not dealing with illegal immigration under normal circumstances. The demography, history and identity of the indigenous people of Manipur are being threatened. I want to stress that the protection of our indigenous community is the first priority of both the Central and the State government<\/a>. To protect the state which has already been affected by various challenges and threats posed by illegal immigration, forest encroachment and poppy plantation, we will continue the deportation of illegal immigrants.”<\/p>\n

The chief minister said, “We are also aware of the fact that certain so called rights activist and part time social workers are closely involved with some groups who are attempting to create more hostility and divisions in the state. They are closely working with the ones spreading lies and hatred against the state and the people of Manipur. They must understand that their work goes against the larger interest of the people of the state and nation. This is a matter of national security and justice will prevail.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
