The Supreme Court<\/a> of India on Wednesday ordered the release of NewsClick<\/a> founder and Editor-in-Chief Prabir Purkayastha<\/a> in Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case based on allegations that the news portal received money to spread pro-China propaganda.<\/p>\n

The top court also declared the arrest and his remand as invalid in eyes of law and also noted that the grounds of arrest were not supplied to him or his counsel before remand.<\/p>\n

Purkayastha’s advocate, Arshdeep Khurana said that the apex court has directed to furnish the bail bond before the trial court.<\/p>\n

“We have been directed to furnish the bail bond before the trial court. This is a major and big relief because we have been maintaining from the beginning that the entire proceedings against him were illegal and the manner of arrest was illegal which has now been upheld by the Supreme Court,” Khurana told ANI.<\/p>\n

The Delhi High Court, on May 6, had granted relief to Chakravarty on account of his medical condition and also turned approver in the case.<\/p>\n

The Special Cell<\/a> of Delhi Police<\/a> arrested Amit Chakravarty, the HR Head of NewsClick and Purkayastha, on October 3 last year.According to the FIR, a large amount of funds to the news portal allegedly came from China<\/a> to “disrupt the sovereignty of India” and cause disaffection against the country.It also alleged Purkayastha conspired with a group — People’s Alliance for Democracy and Secularism<\/a> (PADS) — to sabotage the electoral process during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Police stated that they conducted raids at 88 locations in Delhi and seven in other states on October 3 targeting the suspects mentioned in the FIR and those identified through data analysis.<\/p>\n

Around 300 electronic gadgets were seized from the offices of NewsClick and the residences of the journalists who were examined.<\/p>\n

After the raids, the Special Cell questioned 46 individuals, which included nine female journalists.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
