BENGALURU: Vineet Nayyar, the former vice-chairman of Tech Mahindra, passed away on Thursday. He was 85. An IAS officer who transitioned to the corporate world, Nayyar had a stellar career that spanned over 40 years in both the public and private sectors.
Nayyar was also the founding chairman and managing director of the Gas Authority of India and served as the managing director of HCL Corporation, as well as the vice chairman of HCL Technologies.He was a co-founder and CEO of HCL Perot Systems. Additionally, he worked with the World Bank for over ten years in senior roles.
Under Nayyar’s leadership as vice-chairman, Tech Mahindra achieved significant milestones, with revenue surpassing $3 billion and a workforce exceeding 90,000 employees in the 2013-14 financial year. During this period, the company also expanded into network services.
Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra wrote an emotional tribute on X, \u201cIt saddens me to share the news of the passing of Vineet Nayyar this morning. A distinguished IAS officer, who then served with the World Bank, he became the first chairman of GAIL. He then made a hugely successful transition to the private sector, becoming the managing director of HCL Corporation, and the vice chairman of HCL Technologies. And it was from there that he and two of his close colleagues journeyed to Mahindra British Telecom. We called them the Three Musketeers! They came in with a startup mentality, determined to take MBT (which they renamed Tech Mahindra) into the top ranks of the Indian IT industry\u2014and that\u2019s exactly what they did,\u201d he shared on X.
Mahindra said he was grateful to Nayyar for his vision in exhorting him to establish Mahindra University on the campus of the erstwhile Satyam Computer. \u201cHe provoked us to create what will perhaps be one of the most important legacies of our Group. Above all, thank you for your friendship. You will always live on in our hearts,\u201d he wrote.
Former Tech Mahindra CEO CP Gurnani said, “Heartbreaking news… India has lost one of its finest leaders today… #VineetNayyar… Personally, it’s like losing the light that has led me for decades… He was a friend, philosopher, brother, guide & statesman par excellence. My heart and thoughts are with Reva and the family. #OmShanti,” he wrote on X.
Former HCL Technologies CEO Vineet Nayar recalled fond memories of how he picked up the best lesson on human-centric leadership by watching him in action from close quarters. \u201cVineet was an incredible leader who mentored, inspired, and guided many young leaders like me. He taught me the first lessons of human-centric leadership and to look at decisions from a lens of being fair and just rather than the mindless pursuit of profits.\u201d Nayar fondly remembered their shared love for desserts, particularly chum chum, and how their identical names often led to amusing coincidences and gaffes. \u201cFive years ago, when we were talking about life and the journey they had traveled, he said, ‘chum chum khale’ (have a piece of chum chum), and that was his way of telling me to live in the moment. We both shared the same names, which created a lot of confusion on flights and in hotels and pulled us together as friends. He had a significant impact on how I think of giving back and will be missed in my thoughts and actions.\u201d<\/div>\n
