{"id":52641,"date":"2024-05-17T07:48:23","date_gmt":"2024-05-17T07:48:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/17\/new-caledonia-france-bolsters-security-forces-on-island-after-deadly-rioting-over-paris-voting-reforms\/"},"modified":"2024-05-17T07:48:23","modified_gmt":"2024-05-17T07:48:23","slug":"new-caledonia-france-bolsters-security-forces-on-island-after-deadly-rioting-over-paris-voting-reforms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/17\/new-caledonia-france-bolsters-security-forces-on-island-after-deadly-rioting-over-paris-voting-reforms\/","title":{"rendered":"New Caledonia: France bolsters security forces on island after deadly rioting over Paris voting reforms"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/i3.wp.com\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/05\/768x432\/skynews-marseille-france-new_6556644.jpg?20240517075629&amp;resize=768,432&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"New Caledonia: France bolsters security forces on island after deadly rioting over Paris voting reforms\" title=\"New Caledonia: France bolsters security forces on island after deadly rioting over Paris voting reforms\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component-name=\"sdc-article-body\" data-highlight-intro=\"true\">\n<p>Police reinforcements have been arriving in the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia as part of a major security crackdown following days of deadly rioting.<\/p>\n<p>An extra 1,000 personnel have been sent to the archipelago in addition to the 1,700 already deployed, after <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/france-5933\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">France <\/a><\/strong>imposed a state of emergency to tackle the unrest, which included a curfew and a ban on TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>Five people, including two police officers, have been killed in the violence which erupted following protests over voting reforms being pushed through by French President Emmanuel Macron&#8217;s government.<\/p>\n<p>At least 60 members of the security forces were injured and 214 people arrested during clashes, that also saw arson and looting.<\/p>\n<p>While the situation is now calmer, confrontations have continued in the capital Noumea, according to France&#8217;s high commissioner Louis Le Franc.<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8220;Our calls for calm, peace and reconciliation are beginning to be heard&#8230; It is important that those who are at the origin of the clashes, of the blockages, hear this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after a meeting at the Elysee Palace in Paris, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said: &#8220;Everything is being done to restore order and calm that Caledonians deserve.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Trouble has flared over a proposed new law that will let French residents who have lived in New Caledonia for 10 years vote in provincial elections.<\/p>\n<p>Some local leaders fear the move will dilute the indigenous Kanak vote.<\/p>\n<p>It is the latest flashpoint in long-standing tensions over French rule of the mineral-producing Pacific island some 930 miles (1,500 km) east of Australia.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"ui-media-caption\">\n        <span class=\"u-hide-visually\">Image:<\/span><br \/>\n        <span class=\"ui-media-caption__caption-text\">Security reinforcements have been sent from France.
