Guwahati: After Manipur<\/a>, the Mizoram government<\/a> is likely to initiate biometric enrolment<\/a> for refugees from Myanmar.<\/p>\n

People from Myanmar continue to come to Mizoram<\/a> since the military junta seized power in the nation on February 1, 2021. At least 34,350 people including women, elderly people and children from the neighbouring country took shelter in 11 districts of Mizoram.<\/p>\n

A senior official in the Mizoram government who does not want to be named told ET, \u201cChief Minister Lalduhoma<\/a>, during a meeting with the leaders of NGO Young Mizo Association<\/a> (CYMA), indicated the state government\u2019s plan for biometric enrolment for refugees\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said that around 17,901 people are staying in the rented and relatives\u2019 houses and 16,445 migrants are sheltered in 149 relief camps across seven districts of Mizoram. Another 1,167 refugees have also taken shelter in Mizoram since 2022 after they fled to the state following alleged ethnic persecution<\/a> in Chittagong Hill Tracts<\/a> of Bangladesh.<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Home Affairs<\/a> (MHA) earlier in 2022 asked both the Manipur and Mizoram governments to undertake the recording of biometric and biographic data of all the refugees.<\/p>\n

The Manipur government<\/a> started the process, the then Mizoram government, led by the Mizo National Front (MNF), refused, claiming that the Myanmarese are “brothers and sisters of Mizos and such an initiative would discriminate against them”.Zoram People\u2019s Movement<\/a> (ZPM) led by Lalduhoma came to power defeating the MNF in the November 7, 2023, assembly elections and the new government was hesitant to carry out the exercise.Manipur chief minister<\/a> N Biren Singh had earlier stated that out of \ud835\udfd3\ud835\udfd2\ud835\udfd3\ud835\udfd5 \ud835\udc22\ud835\udc25\ud835\udc25\ud835\udc1e\ud835\udc20\ud835\udc1a\ud835\udc25 \ud835\udc22\ud835\udc26\ud835\udc26\ud835\udc22\ud835\udc20\ud835\udc2b\ud835\udc1a\ud835\udc27\ud835\udc2d\ud835\udc2c \ud835\udc1d\ud835\udc1e\ud835\udc2d\ud835\udc1e\ud835\udc1c\ud835\udc2d\ud835\udc1e\ud835\udc1d from Myanmar, \ud835\udc1b\ud835\udc22\ud835\udc28\ud835\udc26\ud835\udc1e\ud835\udc2d\ud835\udc2b\ud835\udc22\ud835\udc1c \ud835\udc1d\ud835\udc1a\ud835\udc2d\ud835\udc1a \ud835\udc28\ud835\udc1f \ud835\udfd3\ud835\udfcf\ud835\udfd5\ud835\udfd1 \ud835\udc28\ud835\udc1f \ud835\udc2d\ud835\udc21\ud835\udc1e\ud835\udc26 \ud835\udc21\ud835\udc1a\ud835\udc2f\ud835\udc1e \ud835\udc1b\ud835\udc1e\ud835\udc1e\ud835\udc27 \ud835\udc2b\ud835\udc1e\ud835\udc20\ud835\udc22\ud835\udc2c\ud835\udc2d\ud835\udc1e\ud835\udc2b\ud835\udc1e\ud835\udc1d.<\/p>\n

The Government has detected a total of 5457 illegal immigrants in Kamjong District, Manipur as on May 7th, 2024. Out of the total, the biometric data of 5173 such illegal immigrants have been collected so far. Deportation process is underway. We have been giving humanitarian aides to all the illegal immigrants who were detected so far. Despite being an alarming situation, we have been handling it with utmost sensitivity.\u201d<\/p>\n

At least 220 people have been killed, 1,500 injured and 60,000 displaced since violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities on May 3 last year.<\/p>\n

The riots began after a \u2018Tribal Solidarity March\u2019 was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community\u2019s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
