Israeli experts said that his replacement was expected to maintain Iran\u2019s stance toward Israel, and that the real power in Tehran lay with the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cFrom Israel\u2019s point of view, I don\u2019t see any achievement in his being replaced by some other radical conservative Iranian,\u201d said Sima Shine, a former senior official in the Mossad, Israel\u2019s foreign intelligence agency, where she focused on Iran. \u201cThe president is not the most important person in Iran,\u201d said Ms. Shine, now an analyst at the Institute for National Security Studies, a research group in Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">With or without Mr. Raisi, Israel still sees Iran as an existential threat, both because of its efforts to build a nuclear program as well as its support for groups that are hostile to Israel, including Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">To restrain Iranian influence, Israel has assassinated Iranian officials and targeted its nuclear and military facilities. In 2020, Israeli agents <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/09\/18\/world\/middleeast\/iran-nuclear-fakhrizadeh-assassination-israel.html\" title=\"\">killed<\/a> Iran\u2019s top nuclear scientist using a remote-controlled gun.
