Guwahati: The heart of Imphal<\/a> has come to a standstill as the Bazaar Shop Owners community<\/a> declared a 24-hour total shutdown<\/a> in Khwairamband Bazar, signalling a worrying deterioration in law and order<\/a>. This shutdown, effective from Monday midnight until Tuesday midnight, has paralyzed business activities, further exacerbating the ongoing ethnic conflict<\/a>.<\/p>\n

From early Monday morning, shops remained shuttered, and the usually bustling Thangal Bazaar<\/a> and MG Avenue, which supply stock for the entire state, have fallen silent. Even the Paona Bazaar Masjid Road, typically thriving during morning hours, has been eerily quiet. The retail market in Thangal Bazaar’s Alu Gali, known for its lively atmosphere, along with Paona International Market and the major Kaul area, have also shut down completely.<\/p>\n

The shutdown stems from various escalating problems in the bazaar area. The Bazaar Shop Owners community, representing both small and large shop owners, unanimously decided on this drastic measure, citing recent violent incidents as a catalyst. Notably, residents of Thangal Bazar were assaulted at night, prompting widespread fear and unrest.<\/p>\n

In response to these assaults<\/a>, Manipur police<\/a> made significant arrests on May 13. Seven individuals, including five minors, were detained for their involvement in the nighttime attacks. The suspects, identified through CCTV footage, included Khumukcham Brainny Singh of Kongba Makha Nandeibam, Imphal East and RK Ronish Singh of Keishampat Thokchom Leikai, Imphal West. The minors were taken into custody as individuals in conflict with the law (CCL).<\/p>\n

Despite the swift action by law enforcement, the tension remains high. The local MLA, Khumukcham Joykisan, has urged the community to avoid further incidents, warning that legal actions will be taken against those harassing bazaar residents.This shutdown, amid the backdrop of the ongoing ethnic strife, underscores a growing fear among the populace. The paralysis of business activities not only impacts the economy but also highlights the deteriorating law and order in Manipur, raising urgent concerns about the state’s stability.The Indian Army<\/a> in Manipur<\/a> received specific information about the presence of arms and ammunition in the general area of Gwaltabi village, Imphal East district of Manipur. Immediately a joint search operation, with the Manipur Police<\/a> was launched. A substantive cache comprising one Improvised Long-Range Mortar (Pompi), one 303 Rifle, two 12-bore guns, two hand grenades, ammunition, and other war-like stores were recovered.<\/p>\n

The recoveries have been handed over to the Manipur<\/a> Police for further investigation and disposal. .<\/p>\n

Rescued<\/strong>
After fierce gunbattle with suspected insurgents<\/a>\u2019 security forces rescued 75 women of a social and cultural institution in Manipur, according to a statement by the military on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The incident happened on May 16. The group of armed people started firing towards Uyok at 10.45 pm, the police said. Uyok is right in the foothills.<\/p>\n

The Assam Rifles<\/a> in a post on the microblogging website X said soldiers “brought down heavy fire” on the unknown armed people, during which they also evacuated 75 Meira Paibis<\/a>, a women-only social and cultural institution of the valley-dominant Meitei community.<\/p>\n

The Assam Rifles also posted visuals of two soldiers firing a mortar at the suspected insurgents.<\/p>\n

The Meira Paibis have thanked the Assam Rifles and the army for evacuating and rescuing them. They were brought to Leimaram.<\/p>\n

At least 220 people have been killed, 1,500 injured and 60,000 displaced since violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities on May 3 last year.<\/p>\n

The riots began after a \u2018Tribal Solidarity March\u2019 was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community\u2019s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.<\/p>\n

Injury<\/strong>
One person sustained injuries when armed miscreants opened fire at a shop located at Lamphel, Imphal under Imphal Police Station on Sunday.The injured person was rushed to RIMS hospital<\/a> for further treatment. The reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
