Mr. Raisi and Iran\u2019s foreign minister, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, died on Sunday when the helicopter in which they were traveling went down in a mountainous area near the city of Jolfa in northwestern Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here is a brief look at some other prominent figures who have died in helicopter crashes:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-42f54e3a\"><span>Ukraine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A helicopter carrying senior Ukrainian officials including the minister for internal affairs, Denys Monastyrsky, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2023\/01\/18\/world\/russia-ukraine-news\/ukraines-minister-for-internal-affairs-and-at-least-two-children-are-killed-in-a-helicopter-crash-near-kyiv?smid=url-share\" title=\"\">crashed in January 2023<\/a> in a suburb of the capital, Kyiv, killing more than a dozen people including other pivotal figures in the wartime leadership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Monastyrsky was a political ally of President Volodymyr Zelensky, and the crash, which happened near an elementary school, is believed to have been an accident.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-2f9571\"><span>Kenya<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Last month, the chief of Kenya\u2019s military, Gen. Francis Omondi Ogolla, died when a military helicopter in which he was traveling crashed in the west of the country. Other officials were also killed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It was not the first such death involving a prominent Kenyan. In 2012, George Saitoti \u2014 whose posts included finance minister, education minister, acting foreign minister and vice president \u2014 died when the police helicopter he was riding in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/06\/11\/world\/africa\/kenyan-government-official-killed-in-helicopter-crash.html\" title=\"\">plunged into a forest<\/a> west of Nairobi, Kenya\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-36b2fc\"><span>Sudan<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2005, a helicopter carrying John Garang, who for decades had led the country\u2019s rebellion against the Sudanese government, died in a helicopter crash in northern Uganda. He had been flying to southern Sudan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Garang had been installed as vice president of Sudan just weeks before, having played a pivotal role in a peace agreement that ended that country\u2019s civil war. His swearing-in drew in excess of a million people to the streets of Khartoum, the Sudanese capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Garang had led a rebel group, the Sudan People\u2019s Liberation Army, that had fought since 1983 to topple the Sudanese government. South Sudan eventually <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/07\/10\/world\/africa\/10sudan.html\" title=\"\">became a nation<\/a> in 2011.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-6937672\"><span>Others<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Several other prominent people have also died in helicopter crashes. These include <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/02\/07\/us\/kobe-bryant-helicopter-crash-ntsb.html\" title=\"\">basketball star<\/a> Kobe Bryant, who died in 2020 in California; Thai billionaire Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, owner of the English Premier League soccer club Leicester City, who was killed in 2018 in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/28\/world\/europe\/leicester-helicopter-vichai-srivaddhanaprabha.html\" title=\"\">crash outside the stadium<\/a>; and Aleksandr I.
