Mr. Trickett was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/13\/world\/europe\/uk-hong-kong-intelligence-arrests.html\" title=\"\">one of three men charged<\/a> last week under Britain\u2019s National Security Act with assisting the Hong Kong intelligence service, and their case was expected to return to court on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Hong Kong is a former British colony and a special administrative region of China, and tensions between London and Beijing have been ratcheting up in recent months as the British government has become increasingly vocal over allegations of Chinese espionage. In the wake of the charges last week, Britain <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/14\/world\/europe\/uk-china-ambassador-hong-kong-intelligence.html\" title=\"\">summoned<\/a> the Chinese ambassador for a reprimand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trickett, 37, who was a British immigration enforcement officer and a former Royal Marine, was also the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk\/officers\/gayeo0R34N_IjNDeIlgWRpjpHzA\/appointments\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">director of a private security firm<\/a>, MTR Consultancy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">According to the police, a member of the public alerted the authorities to a situation in Grenfell Park in Maidenhead on Sunday about 5:15 p.m. Mr. Trickett, who was from the area, was found and, despite the efforts of emergency responders, was pronounced dead at the site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAn investigation is ongoing into the death, which is currently being treated as unexplained,\u201d the police said in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thamesvalley.police.uk\/news\/thames-valley\/news\/2024\/may\/20-05-2024\/unexplained-death--maidenhead\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a statement,<\/a> adding that \u201ca post-mortem will be conducted in due course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The police have appealed to the public for any information that could help in their investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a statement provided to Reuters, Mr. Trickett\u2019s family said they were \u201cmourning the loss of a much-loved son, brother and family member.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trickett had been released on bail after being charged with assisting a foreign intelligence service and with foreign interference. The Metropolitan Police said <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/news.met.police.uk\/news\/three-people-charged-with-offences-under-the-national-security-act-483705\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">in a statement last week that<\/a> \u201cthe foreign intelligence service to which the above charges relate is that of Hong Kong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The conditions of Mr. Trickett\u2019s bail required him to register at a police station regularly, according to the Thames Valley Police.
