returning to Parliament\" title=\"Craig Mackinlay: Applause for &#8216;bionic MP&#8217; returning to Parliament\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p><figcaption class=\"sc-8353772e-0 cvNhQw\">Cheers for MP recovering from sepsis<!-- --><\/figcaption><\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Conservative MP Craig Mackinlay received a rare and prolonged standing ovation from his fellow MPs as he returned to Parliament for the first time since his hands and feet were amputated following a life-threatening episode of sepsis.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Clapping is usually banned in the Commons chamber, but Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle said he was happy to allow it, calling the South Thanet MP an inspiration.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Prime Minister Rishi Sunak echoed his sentiments and said no one could \u201cfail to be in awe of his incredible resilience\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Mr Mackinlay thanked his parliamentary colleagues and jokingly apologised for being the cause of the rule-breaking applause.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Speaking to the BBC ahead of his return, Mr Mackinlay said he aspired to become known as the &#8220;bionic MP&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He used his question at Prime Minister&#8217;s Questions to call for improved recognition of the early signs of sepsis and the better provision of appropriate prosthetics to amputees. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, who shook Mr Mackinlay\u2019s hand as he arrived in the House of Commons, paid tribute to his \u201ccourage and determination\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Mr Mackinlay was given just a 5% chance of survival <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-69037424\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">after falling severely ill<!-- --><\/a> in September of last year.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He was put in to an induced coma which lasted 16 days and woke to find parts of his arms and legs had turned completely black.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Eight months after falling ill, Mr Mackinlay began his day back by meeting Sir Lindsay, alongside his wife Kati and daughter Olivia<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Mr Mackinlay said it would be an emotional day and that he was looking forward to &#8220;getting back in the saddle&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He added that he would have to find &#8220;a myriad of new routes&#8221; to get around the building with his four new prosthetic limbs.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He also praised the parliamentary authorities who he said had been in regular contact to discuss his return to Westminster. <!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">&#8216;Plastic feet&#8217;<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">After his meeting with Sir Lindsay, Mr Mackinlay headed to the House of Commons, where MPs interrupted questions to the science minister with loud claps and cheers. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">On being selected to ask a question at Prime Minister&#8217;s Questions, Mr Mackinlay received further applause. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He began by apologising for his clothing, explaining that trainers were the only shoes that would fit on his &#8220;plastic feet&#8221; and that he could not fit his jacket over his new arms. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The MP thanked Mr Sunak who he said had &#8220;been with me throughout&#8221;. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;He has been to see me multiple times, and to me that shows the true depth of the character of the prime minister.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He also paid tribute to his family and NHS staff &#8211; some of whom were in the visitors&#8217; gallery &#8211; saying they had taken him from being &#8220;close to death to where I am today&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">However, he also joked that he wasn&#8217;t quite so pleased to see the two surgeons who had removed parts of his limbs. <!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"sc-8353772e-0 cvNhQw\">Kati Mackinlay: I knew Craig was &#8216;hearing me&#8217; in hospital<!-- --><\/figcaption><\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Addressing the prime minister, he asked the government to &#8220;ensure that we embed recognition of early signs of sepsis&#8221;. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;It wouldn&#8217;t have worked for me, mine was too quick and too sudden, but for many people they do get a few days.
