Here are two options if you&#8217;re away on election day\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component-name=\"sdc-article-body\" data-highlight-intro=\"true\">\n<p>Rishi Sunak has come under some criticism for his timing of the general election.<\/p>\n<p>The 4 July poll means Scotland&#8217;s schools will have started breaking up for summer &#8211; and many will be on holiday.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of football fans will also be planning to travel for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/will-englands-or-scotlands-results-at-euro-2024-affect-the-general-election-13141501\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Euros<\/a> <\/strong>which are being held in Germany this summer.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are two options available to people who won&#8217;t be in the country on 4 July.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Postal vote<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you know that you won&#8217;t be able to get to the polling station on polling day, you can vote by post.<\/p>\n<p>You can apply for a postal vote if you&#8217;re away on holiday or because your work schedule means you can&#8217;t get to polling station. You can also choose to vote by post simply if it is more convenient\/<\/p>\n<p>You have to be registered to vote &#8211; the deadline for registration to be able to vote in the general election is Tuesday 18 June.<\/p>\n<p>You can register to vote <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/register-to-vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online<\/a><\/strong>, or by filling out a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/register-to-vote-if-youre-living-in-the-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">form<\/a> <\/strong>and sending it to your local Electoral Registration Office, which you can identify <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/contact-electoral-registration-office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"ui-media-caption\">\n        <span class=\"u-hide-visually\">Image:<\/span><br \/>\n        <span class=\"ui-media-caption__caption-text\">Pic: iStock<br \/>\n        <\/span><br \/>\n      <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>When can I apply?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As early as possible &#8211; but the deadline for applications is 5pm on Wednesday 19 June.<\/p>\n<p>You should receive your postal pack about a week before election day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How can I apply?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can apply online by clicking <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/apply-postal-vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, you can download and fill in a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/apply-for-a-postal-vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">postal vote application form<\/a><\/strong> and send it to your local Electoral Registration Office.<\/p>\n<p>You will need to provide your date of birth, National Insurance number and signature on your application form. The application form for people from England, Scotland and Wales outlines the following reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I&#8217;m a British citizen living overseas<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m in the armed forces<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m a spouse or civil partner of someone in the armed forces<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m a crown servant, or British Council employee<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m a spouse or civil partner of a crown servant or British Council employee<\/li>\n<li>I live in the UK but I&#8217;d need to travel by sea or air to my polling station<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;ll be attending an educational course<\/li>\n<li>Because of my employment<\/li>\n<li>I have a disability<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It also allows you to provide another reason you aren&#8217;t able to vote in person.<\/p>\n<p>In Northern Ireland, they say valid reasons for proxy voting are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Illness\/disability<\/li>\n<li>Away from home for education reasons<\/li>\n<li>Away from home for reasons of work\/employment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How long does a proxy vote last?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can either apply for a single polling day, such as 4 July, or you can select a period of time it can last for. If there&#8217;s a reason why you won&#8217;t be able to vote yourself indefinitely, you can apply to have a permanent proxy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When do I need to apply by?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, you can download and fill in a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/proxy-voting-application-forms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proxy voting application form<\/a><\/strong> and send it to your local Electoral Registration Office.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re applying for someone else to cast a vote on your behalf, you&#8217;ll need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your National Insurance number or any other identity document, for example a birth certificate<\/li>\n<li>The address where your proxy is registered to vote<\/li>\n<li>Contact details for your proxy<\/li>\n<li>To upload a photo of your handwritten signature in black ink on plain white paper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are set to become someone else&#8217;s proxy, that person should have discussed it with you in advance of submitting their application and you will be contacted by the government once the application has gone Registration Office.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you be a proxy for more than one person?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can be a proxy for up to two people living in the UK or up to four people if at least two of them are registered to vote from abroad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What if I don&#8217;t apply in time?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The government says you could apply for an emergency proxy vote in the following
