This week, The Times published a profile of Tems<\/a>, a 28-year-old Nigerian singer-songwriter who, in recent years, has: become the first African artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, appeared on the Beyonc\u00e9 album \u201cRenaissance\u201d and earned an Oscar nomination for co-writing \u201cLift Me Up\u201d for \u201cBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever.\u201d She will release her debut album next month.<\/p>\n

To me, Tems\u2019s music \u2014 which straddles R&B and Afrobeats \u2014 has an honesty: Her tone is earthy and her lyrics are direct, often set to production that isn\u2019t particularly ornate. Her hooks, though, are the killer; they are seemingly crafted to be hummed around the house or screamed over speakers. These elements come together to vividly capture a feeling<\/em> \u2014 whether it be heartbreak (\u201cDamages<\/a>\u201d), defiance (\u201cCrazy Tings<\/a>\u201d) or piety (\u201cMe & U<\/a>\u201d).<\/p>\n

It was unsurprising, then, to learn about her vibes-based songwriting process from the piece. \u201cI just have a sensation, I have signals,\u201d she told the Times reporter Reggie Ugwu. \u201cYou\u2019re just the vessel, it\u2019s just coming out of your mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
