Guwahati: The influx<\/a> from Myanmar<\/a> into Mizoram<\/a> continues as in last 10 days as many as 1,430 Myanmarese nationals took shelter in Mizoram.There is renewed clashes<\/a> between the army and ‘pro-democratic forces in Myanmar. A senior official in Mizoram<\/a> said that on Friday and Saturday around 40 Myanmarese nationals including women and children crossed the India-Myanmar border<\/a>. They took shelter in Mizoram’s Saitual and Champhai districts.<\/p>\n

Opposition<\/a> Mizo National Front (MNF<\/a>) leader T.C. Pachhunga said that despite continuous demands, the Centre has not yet provided any assistance to the Mizoram government to provide relief to the refugees<\/a> from Myanmar, Bangladesh and internally displaced people from Manipur.<\/p>\n

Addressing a party meeting at the MNF office here, Pachhunga said the Central government, considering the humanitarian aspects, must provide financial and other support.<\/p>\n

He said that the previous MNF government on several occasions had urged the Central government to provide funds to take care of the migrants from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Manipur.<\/p>\n

The total number of refugees who entered Mizoram since February 2021 has risen to around 36,000.These refugees stay in rented houses and homes of their relatives or friends. There are around 149 relief camps<\/a> across seven districts of the state.These refugees are mostly the Chin communities<\/a>, who share ethnic, cultural and traditional ties with the Mizos.Six Mizoram\u2019s districts — Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Serchhip and Saitual — share a 510-km long unfenced border with Myanmar\u2019s Chin state. <\/p>\n

Former Mizoram government led by the Mizo National Front (MNF<\/a>) had opposed the Centre’s order to deport Myanmarese refugees while allowing them to take shelter in the state.<\/p>\n

The MHA had in April last year asked the Manipur and Mizoram governments to collect biographic and biometric data of \u201cillegal migrants\u201d in the two states and complete the process by September this year. Following the request of the Manipur government, the timeframe was later extended by a year. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
