The “Deep Depression” over the east-central Bay of Bengal<\/a> is expected to strengthen into a cyclonic storm<\/a> by this evening (Saturday), according to the India Meteorological Department<\/a> (IMD<\/a>).The IMD stated in a statement that it is then anticipated to move across the shores of West Bengal<\/a> and Bangladesh<\/a> at midnight on Sunday as a Severe Cyclonic Storm<\/a> (SCS).<\/p>\n

Deep Depression developed over the same area approximately 380 km south-east of Sagar Islands (WB) and 490 km south of Khepupara (Bangladesh) when the depression over East Central BoB strengthened. The IMD stated in a statement shared on X that it would strengthen into a cyclonic storm by 25 evening and move across the shores of Bangladesh and West Bengal at midnight on 26 as SCS.<\/p>\n

The statement also stated that if it keeps moving almost straight north, it will most likely strike Bangladesh and the neighboring shores of West Bengal between Sagar Island and Khepupara by Sunday midnight as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with winds of 110\u2013120 kmph with gusts up to 135 kmph.<\/p>\n

In addition, the IMD issued a storm surge<\/a> warning, noting that low-lying regions along the coast of West Bengal and Bangladesh are expected to be submerged at the time of landfall<\/a> by a storm surge that is approximately one meter above astronomical tide and three to four meters above astronomical tide, respectively.<\/p>\n

Dr. Somenath Dutta, an IMD scientist, stated earlier on May 23 that yesterday there was a low-pressure region over the southwest Bay of Bengal close to the Chennai coast. That region of low pressure began to move toward the northeast and grew somewhat more intense. It will deepen into a depression on May 24. On May 25, it will strengthen into a cyclonic storm. On May 26, the landfall will occur at midnight. <\/p>\n

The India Meteorological Department has forecasted isolated heavy rainfall over North Coastal Odisha on May 25 and 26, in addition to rainfall alerts<\/a> in West Bengal. Additionally, it has forecasted mild to moderate rainfall on May 27 and 28 across the majority of the eastern districts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal.<\/p>\n
