Cyclone ‘Remal’<\/a> has made landfall<\/a> on the Bangladesh<\/a> coast, news wire agency AFP<\/a> reported, quoting the government meteorological office. Here’s everything you should know about Remal, which is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When will it hit India<\/a>?: <\/strong>Severe cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ is expected to hit the West Bengal<\/a> coast by Sunday midnight.<\/p>\n

Maximum wind speed: <\/strong>According to the Met department<\/a>, severe cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ may have a maximum sustained wind speed of 110-120 km per hour, gusting to 135 kmph.<\/p>\n

Heavy rainfall<\/a> expected: <\/strong>The Met warned of extremely heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of West Bengal<\/a> and heavy to very heavy rainfall in north Odisha on May 26-27 due to the weather system. Heavy to very heavy rainfall will occur in a few places in North and South 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Kolkata<\/a>, Howrah, and Hooghly districts, with extremely heavy precipitation in North and South 24 Parganas and Purba Medinipur districts. The Met issued a red alert for these places.<\/p>\n

Transport services to be affected<\/strong>: As a precautionary measure, the Eastern Railway<\/a> suspended train services in the Sealdah South section and Barasat-Hasnabad section of Sealdah division from 11 pm on Sunday to 6 am on Monday, according to an official. The South Eastern Railway<\/a> cancelled the Kandari Express on Sunday and some MEMU and EMU services to and from the seaside tourist town of Digha on Sunday and Monday, an official said. The authorities of Kolkata airport<\/a> have decided to suspend flight operations for 21 hours from Sunday noon in view of the possible impact of cyclone Remal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Affected states: <\/strong>The primary regions affected are West Bengal, Coastal Bangladesh, Tripura, and some other parts of the north-eastern states. Residents in these areas, as well as in the neighboring states, are urged to brace for adverse weather conditions starting from May 26.Remal vs Amphan: <\/strong>Cyclone Amphan, which was categorized as a super cyclone, made landfall on May 20, 2020, over Sagar Island and caused widespread destruction in Kolkata, South and North 24 Parganas, Howrah, and Nadia. Remal, however, is expected to cause less damage.How much damage is expected: <\/strong>The IMD<\/a> on Sunday warned of localized flooding and major damage to vulnerable structures, power and communication lines, kutcha roads, crops, and orchards in South and North 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal.<\/p>\n

Bengal’s preparations: <\/strong>West Bengal authorities have reportedly evacuated approximately 1.10 lakh people from coastal regions, including the Sundarbans and Sagar Island, to secure shelters. To bolster rescue and relief efforts, 16 battalions each from the state disaster management and NDRF<\/a> have been deployed in the coastal areas, an official told ANI.
