said Monday he was \u201coutraged\u201d by an Israeli attack in Rafah that the authorities in Gaza said killed dozens of people. \u201cThese operations must stop,\u201d he said, referring to the strike on Sunday. \u201cThere are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/emmanuelmacron\/status\/1795041573224206368?s=46&amp;t=WiyCJ3iOZhKl5lJ3ldGVBA\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">no safe areas<\/a> in Rafah for Palestinian civilians.\u201d Mr. Macron called \u201cfor full respect for international law and an immediate ceasefire.\u201d His comments came after the International Court of Justice on Friday ordered Israel to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/24\/world\/middleeast\/icj-israel-gaza-rafah-ruling.html\" title=\"\">halt its offensive<\/a> in the city and added to a drumbeat of criticism of Israel over its conduct in the war.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"css-1i3ul0c eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-1il0jfh evys1bk0\">Aid trucks from Egypt reached the Gaza Strip under a new U.S.-brokered agreement to reopen a vital conduit for humanitarian relief, the Israeli military and the Egyptian Red Crescent said. Some 126 trucks from Egypt containing food, fuel and other necessities made it to the Kerem Shalom crossing into Gaza on Sunday, the Israeli military said in a statement. The trucks were inspected by Israeli officials, said Ahmad Ezzat, an Egyptian Red Crescent official. On Sunday, the U.N. trucks sent to Kerem Shalom to pick up the Egyptian aid were forced to evacuate the crossing because of a security issue, according to Sam Rose, a spokesman for UNRWA. Officials including Mr. Rose said the aid had not made it past the crossing as of Sunday.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"css-1i3ul0c eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-1il0jfh evys1bk0\">Germany\u2019s vice chancellor, Robert Habeck, has said that Israel\u2019s offensive in Rafah is \u201cincompatible with international law.\u201d His comments were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/p.dw.com\/p\/4gHYV\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> on Saturday by the country\u2019s public broadcaster, Deutsche Welle. Senior German officials had previously warned Israel against attacking Rafah, but Mr. Habeck\u2019s comments appear to represent a hardening of that tone in a country with a longstanding <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/29\/world\/europe\/germany-israel-gaza.html\" title=\"\">policy of support<\/a> for Israel. \u201cIsrael must not carry out this attack, at least not in the way it did in the Gaza Strip before, bombing refugee camps and so on,\u201d Mr. Habeck said.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"css-1i3ul0c eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-1il0jfh evys1bk0\">Israel\u2019s war cabinet met on Sunday night to discuss continuing efforts to reach a cease-fire deal and free hostages held in Gaza, according to an Israeli official who spoke on the condition of anonymity given the sensitivity of the talks. Diplomats are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/25\/world\/middleeast\/israel-hamas-hostage-cease-fire-talks.html\" title=\"\">aiming to restart<\/a> negotiations for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas at some point in the next week, according to three officials briefed on the process.
