Some praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/01\/business\/india-economy-election.html\" title=\"\">economic achievements<\/a>. Supporters of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/23\/world\/asia\/india-election-modi-opposition.html\" title=\"\">candidates<\/a> challenging Mr. Modi\u2019s party criticized what they saw as his disregard for minorities and democratic norms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhat is the vision for India in 2024?\u201d the host, Somu Kumar, a manager at a cloud computing company, said recently of that winter potluck. \u201cThat gets a lot of people excited to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">India\u2019s 35 million-member diaspora, roughly equivalent in population to Delhi\u2019s metropolitan area, represents a tiny minority compared with the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/17\/world\/asia\/india-elections-long-explainer.html\" title=\"\">nearly one billion<\/a> people who are eligible to take part in a six-week voting process that ends on Saturday. Expatriate Indians also cannot cast absentee ballots under India\u2019s electoral laws.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the diaspora is heavily courted by India\u2019s main political parties. Many of its members are from the country\u2019s political and business elites, and voters back home want to know what they think.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhen a person is abroad, people take interest and believe what they say is right,\u201d said Adapa Prasad, the president of the American branch of Mr. Modi\u2019s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. The result, he said, is that the 10,000 or so B.J.P. volunteers in the United States alone can reach tens of thousands of voters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This spring, Indians around the world have been hosting gatherings and rallies for their preferred political parties. Many Indians abroad are proud of India\u2019s rise and associate Mr. Modi with it. So much of the recent activity has supported his bid for a third term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the United States, which the Indian government says is home to more than <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mea.gov.in\/population-of-overseas-indians.htm\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">five million<\/a> people of Indian origin, there have been pro-Modi rallies at Times Square, the Washington Monument, the Golden Gate Bridge and other landmarks. \u201cSave India,\u201d some of the pro-Modi posters said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Pro-Modi groups have also set up phone banks and held other events. In a Chicago suburb last month, Modi supporters wearing the B.J.P.\u2019s saffron tassels lit a bonfire next to a Hindu school as part of a sacred fire ritual. India\u2019s Hindu majority is a key constituency for Mr. Modi, who has been criticized for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/22\/world\/asia\/modi-india-ram-temple.html\" title=\"\">normalizing Hindu-nationalist policies<\/a> in a country born as a secular republic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Australia, a caravan of cars draped in saffron flags stretched for miles through Sydney in April. In Germany, Modi supporters who own restaurants in Berlin and Munich have been hosting gatherings for B.J.P. supporters, said Arun Varma, an entrepreneur who founded an e-commerce brand there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And in Britain, people have been visiting Hindu temples, as well as mosques and churches, to offer prayers for Mr. Modi\u2019s electoral success, said Neil Lal, the chairman and president of the Indian Council of Scotland and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe election is the talk of the town,\u201d Mr. Lal said from London.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Modi has actively cultivated the diaspora\u2019s support over the years, in part by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/18\/world\/asia\/india-diaspora.html\" title=\"\">filling stadiums<\/a> around the world for rallies. A 2020 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/carnegieendowment.org\/research\/2021\/02\/how-do-indian-americans-view-india-results-from-the-2020-indian-american-attitudes-survey?lang=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a think tank in Washington, found that a majority of Indians abroad supported him over his rivals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Milan Vaishnav, a political scientist at Carnegie who studies India\u2019s diaspora, said that expatriate Indians were a marginal force in Indian politics and that their campaign donations, while difficult to quantify, were small compared with the billions of dollars raised at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cBut gatherings of the diaspora have helped the B.J.P. create an image of global popularity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The B.J.P. isn\u2019t the only party active outside India. The overseas arm of its main rival, the Indian National Congress, organizes events, distributes campaign posters and helps to place columns in newspapers. The Aam Aadmi Party, which is part of a parliamentary coalition led by the Congress Party, has overseas members who run phone banks and spread <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/indian_nagrik\/status\/1795135410474991651\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">friendly memes<\/a> about its candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Kumar, an Aam Aadmi supporter, said there was growing concern in the diaspora about a potential third Modi term. He said expatriates watching India worry about the recent <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/12\/world\/asia\/india-law-muslim-citizenship.html\" title=\"\">marginalization of religious minorities<\/a>, the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/29\/nyregion\/sikh-assassination-plot-charges-india.html\" title=\"\">assassination of a separatist<\/a> and the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/21\/world\/asia\/india-national-congress-bank-accounts-bjp.html\" title=\"\">jailings of opposition politicians<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some of the people who attend his potlucks, many of whom he plays cricket with, are stalwart Modi backers. Others are onetime Modi supporters who now question whether he should be re-elected.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI hope this also translates back toward India,\u201d Mr. Kumar said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Outside of the main parties, independent activists who live abroad have criticized the government in ways that would be difficult in India, where Mr. Modi\u2019s government has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/19\/world\/asia\/modi-india-election.html\" title=\"\">cracked down on dissent<\/a> and jailed opposition leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One of those activists, Suresh Ediga, an Indian expatriate in New Jersey, organizes meetings on election reform and runs <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/sureshe.wordpress.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a blog that fact checks Indian politicians<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIndependent institutions have collapsed under Modi,\u201d he said. \u201cThat is more alarming than anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While many in the diaspora have thrown themselves into campaigning, others have taken a more hands-off approach.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Lion Hina Trivedi, a prominent social worker from Gujarat, the Indian state where Mr. Modi <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/05\/07\/world\/asia\/local-policies-help-an-indian-candidate-narendra-modi-trying-to-go-national.html\" title=\"\">served as chief minister<\/a> from 2001 to 2014, has known him for decades and met him on his trips to Washington.
