Several people have been injured in a knife attack in the German city of Mannheim, with police launching a “major operation”.<\/p>\n

Police shot at the attacker. They said the incident happened in the southwestern city’s market square shortly after 11.30am local time.<\/p>\n

“A firearm was used against the attacker,” Mannheim police said in a statement.<\/p>\n

They said they could not immediately give any information on the severity of the injuries, including to the attacker.<\/p>\n

German newspaper Bild said a video had emerged showing a knifeman attacking people before being shot by an armed officer.<\/p>\n

“There is currently a major police operation on the market square in Mannheim,” local police said in a statement.<\/p>\n

“A rescue helicopter is also in use. No further information can be provided at this time.”<\/p>\n
