Guwahati: After years of persuasion Assam<\/a> will finally get another Indian Institute of Management<\/a> (IIM). IIM Ahmedabad<\/a> will mentor the mint fresh IIM in Guwahati<\/a>.Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma<\/a> when he was Education minister<\/a> in the Congress government<\/a> earlier has been advocating and persuading for an IIM in Guwahati. There is an IIM in Shillong<\/a> already.<\/p>\n

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated in X, \u201cAs evident from the letters, the swift transformation from idea to execution illustrates the power of a Double Engine government. My gratitude to Hon\u2019ble Prime Minister<\/a> Shri@narendramodiJi and Hon\u2019ble Education Minister Shri@dpradhanbjpJi for their cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stated, \u201cSharing a BIG NEWS! Following our request in 2023, Hon PM Shri@narendramodi ji has given a special gift to the people of Assam by approving an Indian Institute of Management near Guwahati, making it among the few cities to house an IIT, AIIMS, Nat\u2019l Law Univ & now IIM. Over the last 18 months, we presented a strong case to the Hon\u2019ble Education Minister Shri@dpradhanbjp Ji and the Education Ministry. Assam offered premier land and logistical support for this endeavour. Now IIM Ahmedabad will mentor the upcoming IIM in Guwahati\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said that this will be game changer for Assam, making the State an education hub<\/a> in Eastern India and also help fulfill our economic aspirations<\/a>. \u201cI envisage these premiere institutes to collaborate among themselves and industry to unleash the power of multidisciplinary education\u201d.<\/p>\n

In a letter to Prime minister Narendra Modi on April 19 ,2023, Sarma said, \u201cI would like to submit that at present, there are 20 IIMs across the country with Shillong being the lone city from North Eastern Region<\/a> to be home to one. Assam being the leading State in the region and a hub of diverse industrial sectors such as oil, tea, coal, petrochemicals etc., the lack of a premier management institute is acutely felt. Due to the Government of India’s steps to promote economic development of the North Eastern Region and the Act East Policy, Assam has huge potential to be a hub of modern management education<\/a> on an international level, being close to the South Asian countries. An IIM will attract elite corporate organizations to invest in human talent and encourage investments.\u201dHe added, \u201cFurther, establishment of an IIM in addition to IIT Guwahati and the newly established AlIMS Guwahati, will enable these premier institutions to work in tandem in various fields. In this connection, as sought by the Ministry of Education, the State Government has already committed to provide land, free from all encumbrances, in an area with good infrastructure, industrial linkages and located within an hour distance from the airport and well connected with trains. The State Government will erect the boundary wall. Accordingly, we have shortlisted two sites for the possible location of the IIM. In this backdrop, I request your kind intervention for setting up of an IIM at Guwahati, at the earliest”.He also sent a letter to Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Joint secretary ministry of Education in a letter to the Director of IIM Ahmedabad, \u201c I am directed to say that a proposal for establishment of new IM in the State of Assam is under examination in this Ministry. In this regard, State Government has agreed to provide a plot of land free of cost and free from all encumbrances in an area with good infrastructure and industrial linkages. Accordingly, State Government identified four plots of land and provided the details of the said land to this Ministry for selection.”<\/div>\n
