One person has died and eight were left injured after an apartment building collapsed in Turkey on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Firefighters were called to a flattened five-storey building in Kucukcekmece in Istanbul<\/strong><\/a> after it collapsed at 8.40am (5.40am in the UK).<\/p>\n

Istanbul Governor Davut Gul said at the scene that seven people were initially pulled from the rubble, with two left severely injured.<\/p>\n

Later, firefighters recovered a body of a man from Turkmenistan, as well as one more injured person.<\/p>\n

It is unclear what caused the 36-year-old building to collapse, but there was no sign of an explosion or any seismic activity.<\/p>\n

The top two floors of the building were being used as apartments, which Turkey’s<\/strong><\/a> urbanisation minister Mehmet Ozhaseki said on X had been built without complying to standards.<\/p>\n

He added additional storeys had been illegally added later. Interior minister Ali Yerlikaya also said two people – the building owner and the owner of a restaurant on the ground floor – had been detained.<\/p>\n
