New Delhi: The probe into the 2023 attack on the Indian consulate<\/a> in London has revealed that the date of the protest was preponed to March 19, 2023, from March 22, 2023, following a crackdown on radical preacher and Waris Punjab De<\/a> (WPD<\/a>) chief Amritpal Singh<\/a> by the Punjab police<\/a> in March last year.Amritpal Singh is contesting the Lok Sabha elections<\/a> from Khadoor Sahib<\/a> in Punjab as an Independent candidate. The constituency voted on June 1 during the last phase of general elections.<\/p>\n

The fresh revelations were made by London businessman Inderpal Singh Gaba<\/a> (38), who was arrested by the National Investigation Agency<\/a> (NIA) in April this year. Gaba, who is learnt to have confessed to his role in taking part in the protest, allegedly claimed to have gone there to participate in a peaceful protest. Gaba visited India in December last year with his family and was arrested after several rounds of questioning for his alleged involvement in the unlawful act in London. Gaba, NIA<\/a> officials said, owns liquor and grocery stores, and is a United Kingdom citizen. He also owns a house in Greater Kailash in New Delhi. He was detained at the Indira Gandhi International airport upon his arrival in December 2023 based on a lookout circular (LOC) issued against him by the NIA. “<\/p>\n

He was later allowed to move freely and was questioned by the NIA and arrested on April 25, 2024 based on the evidence,” they said. He is presently in judicial custody. Gaba, according to the NIA, is a Sikh of Afghan origin and has been staying in London since 1995. <\/p>\n

“NIA investigations in the case so far have revealed that the incidents in London on March 19 and 22 last year were parts of a larger conspiracy to unleash vicious attacks on the Indian missions and its officials,” they said. The case of attack on the Indian embassies was transferred to the NIA last year following which the sleuths examined CCTV footage and sought help from the public to identify the protestors. The agency further issued LOC against those identified.<\/p>\n

In the London attack case, officials said the NIA has released pictures of 45 people allegedly responsible for vandalising the high commission and showing disrespect to the national flag. The Metropolitan Police<\/a> in London too has made a few arrests in connection with the protest last year.Besides the UK<\/a>, Indian missions and consulates across the United States, Canada and Australia witnessed a series of attacks by pro-Khalistan supporters. ET has learnt that New Delhi also shared with London authorities a list of at least two dozen suspects identified in the video, confirmed a North Block official.<\/div>\n
