A police officer who was stabbed during an attack at a far-right rally in Germany has died.<\/p>\n

The 29-year-old was one of six people who suffered serious injuries in the central square of Mannheim<\/a> <\/strong>on Friday.<\/p>\n

He was placed in an artificial coma but died on Sunday, officials said.<\/p>\n

Chancellor Olaf Scholz<\/a><\/strong> posted on X, formerly Twitter, that he was “deeply grieved” and said the officer’s “commitment to the safety of us all deserves the highest recognition”.<\/p>\n

The officer was stabbed several times in the head and neck.<\/p>\n

A 25-year-old suspect from Afghanistan was shot and wounded at the scene.<\/p>\n

He remains in hospital and a judge has ordered he be held on suspicion of attempted murder.<\/p>\n

Police and prosecutors have not publicly suggested any possible motive for the attack.<\/p>\n

However, it happened during an event organised by German<\/a> <\/strong>far-right group Pax Europa.<\/p>\n

Anti-Islam activist Michael Sturzenberger, 59, who is one of the group’s leading figures, was among those wounded.<\/p>\n

The other victims were four men aged 25, 36, 42 and 54.<\/p>\n

The 54-year-old man suffered injuries that were initially thought to be life-threatening, but he is now expected to survive.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
