He completely reshaped Mexican politics and built an entire political party around his outsize personality.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Critics also say he granted the military too much power and pushed measures that would chip away at democratic institutions, like the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Yet, as the end of his six-year tenure approaches, Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador remains widely popular.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After nearly five decades in public life, Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador, 70, has said he will retire \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tabascohoy.com\/esto-es-lo-que-hara-amlo-cuando-deje-la-presidencia\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">completely<\/a>\u201d following his final day in office on Sept. 30, though some observers believe he will find a way to continue to exert influence behind the scenes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He has said he wants to spend his days at his family\u2019s ranch in the southern state of Chiapas. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For many in the neighboring state of Tabasco, a bastion of support for Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador, and the small town of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tabascohoy.com\/me-da-mucho-orgullo-ser-de-tepetitan-macuspana-soy-del-pueblo-obrador\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Tepetit\u00e1n<\/a>, where he was born, Sunday was bittersweet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Miguel Angel Solis Burelo, 72, said he was thrilled to see Ms. Sheinbaum win because she was \u201cwell prepared\u201d to carry on Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador\u2019s agenda. He also said it was \u201ca great joy\u201d to see a woman assume the presidency.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But Mr. Solis, who drove a motorboat down a river from the ranch where he works to vote in Tepetit\u00e1n, admitted he also felt \u201ca bit sad\u201d to see Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador nearing the end of his presidency. Mexico\u2019s presidents are limited to one six-year term by the Constitution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Kenia Sandoval Salvador, 47, a stay-at-home mother, said she watched video highlights on social media of Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador\u2019s career before she went to the polls on Sunday in Macuspana, a town also in Tabasco where the president was raised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI already feel the nostalgia,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Born in 1953, Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/gobierno.com.mx\/amlo\/amlo.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">attended<\/a> the only elementary school in Tepetit\u00e1n and helped at his parents\u2019 store. He <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eluniversal.com.mx\/estados\/escuelas-testigos-de-la-adolescencia-de-amlo\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">started<\/a> middle school about 40 minutes away in Macuspana. He finished it and high school in Villahermosa, the state\u2019s capital where his family moved. He went to college in Mexico City, where he later served as mayor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Sunday\u2019s election was seen by many as a referendum on Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador\u2019s leadership, and Ms. Sheinbaum\u2019s decisive victory was interpreted as a vote of confidence in the president, his policies and the Morena party.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Antenor Paz Acosta, 75, who works on a ranch in Tepetit\u00e1n and said he had played baseball with the president growing up, made clear he had the current leader in mind, even as he voted for Ms. Sheinbaum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019m always supporting what Andr\u00e9s Manuel has done,\u201d Mr. Paz said. \u201cWhere he goes, she does, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">During Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador\u2019s tenure, the economy grew, millions of Mexicans were lifted out of poverty, the minimum wage doubled, pensions were expanded and workers\u2019 benefits improved. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But his presidency has also fueled concern. He has been criticized for his \u201chugs, not bullets\u201d strategy toward criminal cartels that has resulted in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/20\/world\/americas\/violence-mexico-killings.html\" title=\"\">more violence<\/a>. His detractors also say he hobbled the nation\u2019s health system and prioritized fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador, who is known by his initials AMLO, will be remembered by many for his morning news conferences, or ma\u00f1aneras, during which he spent hours nearly everyday for the past five years sharing his feelings, celebrating his victories, attacking his critics and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/22\/world\/americas\/mexico-president-inquiry-times-journalist.html\" title=\"\">lashing out at journalists<\/a>. He could come across as both fiery and folksy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cL\u00f3pez Obrador governed through the ma\u00f1aneras,\u201d said Blanca G\u00f3mez, a Mexican journalist who wrote an unauthorized biography of Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador in 2005. \u201cHe realized that people paid attention when he spoke. People believe him. There are people who are going to miss his ma\u00f1aneras. And many people will be happy not to hear him anymore.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though L\u00e1zaro Vidal Mart\u00ednez, 62, a farmer in Tepetit\u00e1n, was usually working in the mornings, he said he would occasionally listen. \u201cI liked that he showed his face daily because other presidents never did that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Solis, the ranch worker who arrived by motorboat to vote, said what he liked most about Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador\u2019s presidency was his social welfare programs that helped \u201cus who didn\u2019t receive help or who weren\u2019t taken into account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He said his pension, for those 65 and over, has jumped fivefold over the years to roughly $170 every month.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Still, Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador should have been tougher on criminal groups, Mr. Solis added, though he was generally satisfied with the country\u2019s direction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe want the movement to continue,\u201d he said, before hopping into his boat to head home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">During campaign visits to Tabasco, Ms. Sheinbaum promised to preserve Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador\u2019s legacy, which <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/live\/?ref=watch_permalink&amp;v=1069389197586811\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">drew<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.milenio.com\/politica\/elecciones\/en-tabasco-sheinbaum-promete-cuidar-legado-de-amlo\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">cheers<\/a> from the crowds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Tepetit\u00e1n, a town of 1,500 people, what was once his grandparents\u2019 home opened last year as the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/sic.cultura.gob.mx\/ficha.php?table=museo&amp;table_id=2343\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Obrador House Community Museum<\/a> and features his bust outside. In Macuspana, a larger town with 31,000 residents, the lone reminder is a mural outside the public library. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Not far away in a cafe in the town\u2019s main square sat M\u00e1rvel Hern\u00e1ndez Gut\u00fa, 79, a Tepetit\u00e1n native, lawyer and former state official who has known Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador since their time together in a previous political party. He wished Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador had done more to develop Mexico in terms of business and infrastructure, especially in Tabasco, one of the poorest states in the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAs far as his legacy,\u201d Mr. Hern\u00e1ndez said, \u201cwe can\u2019t say he left us great things because he had the opportunity to do so and he didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Regardless of their views, many said they didn\u2019t believe Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador would suddenly disappear after decades of public life and with his prot\u00e9g\u00e9e in charge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHis legacy matters a lot to him,\u201d said Ms. G\u00f3mez, the journalist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a small way, it will continue on in Tepetit\u00e1n.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">During Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador\u2019s successful presidential campaign six years ago, Mr. Vidal, who said his parents knew Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador\u2019s parents, allowed a local artist to paint a mural on the side of his house that sits at the entrance to the town. Anyone entering or leaving the community would see it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It has been repainted three times, with new flourishes added on each occasion. Surrounding Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador\u2019s face are flora and fauna found throughout Tabasco: howler monkeys, parrots and the alligator gar fish, a local delicacy and a nickname for Mr. L\u00f3pez Obrador in Spanish.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The mural\u2019s artist died last year, Mr. Vidal said, and he hopes that another artist can help preserve the reminder of the town\u2019s most famous son.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThat mural will stay,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/04\/world\/americas\/mexico-president-sheinbaum-amlo.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sunday was a historic day in Mexico, with a landslide election victory for Claudia Sheinbaum, the first woman and first Jewish person to become the country\u2019s president.
