Amid the ongoing water scarcity in Delhi<\/a>, the Supreme Court<\/a> of India on Thursday issued directions to the Himachal Pradesh<\/a> government to release 137 cusecs of surplus water<\/a> to the national capital.The vacation bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and KV Viswanathan also instructed the Himalayan state to release water on June 7, with prior intimation to Haryana<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Further, the top court has also said that Haryana shall facilitate flow of surplus water released by Himachal Pradesh.<\/p>\n

The Upper Yamuna River Board<\/a> has been directed to measure water released by Himachal Pradesh at Hathnikund<\/a>. Moreover, the Delhi government<\/a> has been asked to ensure there is no wastage of water and also submit a status report by June 10.<\/p>\n

Earlier on Monday, the vacation bench posted the plea of the Delhi government seeking additional water from neighbouring Haryana for hearing on June 6 and asked stakeholders including the Centre<\/a> to hold a meeting on the same.<\/p>\n

The apex court also sought minutes of the meeting and suggestions on the steps taken.The plea filed by Delhi’s Water Minister Atishi<\/a> has made the Centre, the BJP-governed Haryana and the Congress-ruled Himachal Pradesh parties to the petition, saying that access to water is essential for survival and is one of the basic human rights.The petition has sought a direction to the Haryana government for immediate and continuous release of water at the Wazirabad<\/a> barrage, including but not limited to the full surplus water provided by Himachal Pradesh for the National Capital Territory<\/a> (NCT) of Delhi.<\/p>\n
