{"id":67490,"date":"2024-06-07T00:31:06","date_gmt":"2024-06-07T00:31:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/07\/children-among-dozens-killed-in-attack-on-sudanese-village\/"},"modified":"2024-06-07T00:31:06","modified_gmt":"2024-06-07T00:31:06","slug":"children-among-dozens-killed-in-attack-on-sudanese-village","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/07\/children-among-dozens-killed-in-attack-on-sudanese-village\/","title":{"rendered":"Children Among Dozens Killed in Attack on Sudanese Village"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1050\" height=\"549\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/static01.nyt.com\/images\/2024\/06\/07\/video\/07sudan-funeral\/07sudan-funeral-facebookJumbo.jpg?fit=1050,549&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Children Among Dozens Killed in Attack on Sudanese Village\" title=\"Children Among Dozens Killed in Attack on Sudanese Village\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A gun and artillery assault by Sudanese paramilitaries on a village in Sudan\u2019s main farming region killed at least 104 people, including dozens of children, Sudanese pro-democracy activists said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The exact circumstances of the attack on Wednesday at Wad al-Noura, a village 70 miles south of the capital, Khartoum, were disputed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the high death toll, as well as images of a mass burial on Thursday that circulated on social media, and were verified by The New York Times, drew international condemnation and made the assault the latest flashpoint in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/05\/world\/africa\/sudan-khartoum-darfur-war.html\" title=\"\">Sudan\u2019s brutal yearlong war<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cEven by the tragic standards of Sudan\u2019s conflict, the images emerging from Wad Al-Noura are heartbreaking,\u201d Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the top U.N. official in Sudan, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe world is watching,\u201d the British Foreign Secretary, David Cameron <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/David_Cameron\/status\/1798751935664726323\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">wrote on social media<\/a>. \u201cThose responsible will be held to account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Still, Sudan has seen numerous atrocities yet little accountability since it plunged into a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/sudan-khartoum-military.html\" title=\"\">disastrous civil war<\/a> just over a year ago, when fighting broke out between the national army and a powerful paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And with phone lines down in Jazeera Province, where Wad al-Noura is, Sudanese were relying on videos and accounts from local activists to make sense of the latest mass casualties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A video shared online and geolocated by The Times shows a convoy of at least five Rapid Support Forces vehicles lining a roadway about half a mile from Wad al-Noura on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Gunmen standing on the back of the stationary vehicles can be seen firing machine guns across open fields toward the village. The video runs for about five minutes, amid constant gunfire.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A person narrating the video says the inhabitants have blocked access to the village to prevent the fighters from reaching it. It does not appear that the fighters were shot at.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">However a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Abobaidaamin7\/status\/1798237120894791854\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">separate video<\/a> from inside Wad al-Noura suggested the village had mounted some sort of armed defense. In the video, a resident pleads for help as gunfire erupts outside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe village is under siege,\u201d the man says. \u201cSave Wad al-Noura.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The local resistance committee, part of a national network of pro-democracy groups, called the incident a massacre. On Thursday it posted videos showing at least 50 bodies draped in cloth and laid out for burial at the village.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The videos and photographs were verified by The Times and the Sudan Witness Project at the Center for Information Resilience, a nonprofit organization that monitors conflicts and documents potential war crimes. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At least 104 people were killed, the resistance committee said, blaming the national army for failing to save them. \u201cThe people of Wad Al-Noura called on the army to rescue them, but they shamefully did not respond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Rapid Support Forces disputed that account. In a statement, it admitted its forces had opened fire on Wad al-Noura, but said they were attacking military positions around the village, and had lost eight soldiers in the fighting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The head of UNICEF, Catherine Russell, said in a statement that she was \u201chorrified\u201d by reports that at least 35 children were killed and 20 injured in the violence, and called on the warring parties to abide by international laws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Sudan\u2019s army chief, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, visited villagers wounded in the attack on Thursday. Speaking at a hospital in the nearby town of Al Managil, he said the army would deliver a \u201charsh response\u201d to the R.S.F. for the killings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The village is in a farming region that was once the breadbasket of Sudan, but is now a vast battleground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/20\/world\/africa\/sudan-army-rsf-wad-madani.html\" title=\"\">The R.S.F. captured Wad Madani<\/a>, the regional capital of Jazeera Province, in December as part of a stunning series of victories that put Sudan\u2019s Army at a disadvantage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In recent months, the military has tried to recapture Jazeera with a major counteroffensive. Wad al-Noura is about 20 miles from the nearest frontline in that fight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In western Darfur region, the R.S.F. has besieged El Fasher, the last remaining stronghold of Sudan\u2019s army in Darfur, stoking fears that a full-scale war inside the city could bring ethnic massacres or worsen a hunger crisis that aid workers say threatens to become a famine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The R.S.F. has received arms and other <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/09\/29\/world\/africa\/sudan-war-united-arab-emirates-chad.html\" title=\"\">backing from the United Arab Emirates<\/a>, its main foreign sponsor, according to American and U.N. officials. On Thursday, the United States imposed new sanctions related to the conflict in Sudan on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/ofac.treasury.gov\/recent-actions\/20240606\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">seven companies based in the Emirates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Abdalrahman Altayeb contributed reporting from Port Sudan, Sudan.
