New Delhi: As the new NDA government gets to work, all eyes are on the timing of the opening session of Parliament. The BJPled dispensation is working on two options, said people with knowledge of the matter.There\u2019s a discussion on whether to have a single budget<\/a> session or to split it into two. The government will take a decision in the next few days, though it may be inclined towards a session divided by a recess \u2014 with the motion of thanks in the first part, and the budget presented in the latter, they said.<\/p>\n

Another crucial aspect of the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha is the election of the Speaker \u2014 a post that the BJP<\/a> would like to retain, though it does not have a majority this time. <\/p>\n

If the Lok Sabha session is divided into two parts, the first will consist of eight sittings from June 24 to July 3. A pro-tem speaker will be appointed, which is normally the senior-most member of the Lok Sabha.<\/p>\n

In the first two days, he or she will administer the oath of the office to the newly elected MPs. June 26 has been proposed as the date to elect the speaker of the Lok Sabha.On June 27, President Droupadi Murmu is likely to address both houses. The remaining four days \u2014 from June 28 to July 3 \u2014 have been kept for debating the motion of thanks to the President\u2019s address. In this option, the Economic Survey will be laid before the house on July 3, after which there will be a recess.The second part is likely to begin on July 22, with the presentation of the Union budget<\/a>.The session will continue till August 9, consisting of 15 sittings.<\/p>\n

The other option under consideration is a single budget session that would possibly run from July 1 to August 2, consisting of 24 sittings over 33 days. July 1-2 would be for administering the oaths of office to the MPs. The speaker would be elected on July 3.<\/p>\n

Under this proposal, the presidential address would likely be on July 4 and the Union budget would be presented on July 8. The Rajya Sabha will start on July 4 and end on August 2. In this option, the Rajya Sabha will conduct a discussion on the motion of thanks on July 5, July 9 and 10.<\/p>\n

The full budget for FY25 is the one of the more immediate tasks of finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who had presented a vote on account on February 1, as is the practice in an election year.<\/p>\n

The budget is expected to detail the government\u2019s vision for the next five years and will be keenly watched for the next-generation reforms that had been pledged in the interim budget in February, while taking on board the views of the NDA allies.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, two candidates lodged in jail were also elected in recently held elections, resulting in an unusual conundrum. The law may keep them from attending the proceedings of the house, but they do have the constitutional right to take oath as Members of Parliament.<\/p>\n

These two newly elected MPs are radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh from Punjab\u2019s Khadoor Sahib seat and terror financing accused Sheikh Abdul Rashid from Jammu and Kashmir\u2019s Baramulla seat.
