Delhiites are facing an extended period of intense heat as the capital reels under unrelenting high temperatures. The India Meteorological Department<\/a> (IMD) has issued a series of alerts, indicating the severity of the situation. Here’s a comprehensive look at the factors contributing to Delhi’s scorching heat and its impact on residents.<\/p>\n

Heatwave<\/a> Alerts and Conditions<\/strong><\/p>\n

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Monday and yellow alerts for Tuesday and Wednesday. The city has already endured eight consecutive days of heatwave conditions, including three particularly warm nights. A heatwave is officially declared when the maximum temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius and is at least 4.5 degrees above normal. A severe heatwave occurs if the maximum temperature exceeds 45 degrees Celsius or is 6.5 degrees or more above normal.What Drives a Heatwave?<\/strong>
Delhi’s high daytime temperatures are attributed to dry and warm westerly winds<\/a> blowing from Rajasthan and south Haryana. The city is also experiencing partly cloudy skies under the influence of a western disturbance, which prevents the night temperature from dropping significantly, leading to warm nights.<\/p>\n

Impact of Global Warming<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Climate scientist Madhavan Rajeevan<\/a> has linked the longer spell of heatwaves to global warming, stating that it is contributing to the natural variability. “We will tend to get more frequent, longer, and stronger heatwaves,” he said in an interview with TOI, emphasizing the need for better preparedness.<\/p>\n

Urban Heat Island<\/a> Effect<\/strong>
Delhi’s urban heat island phenomenon exacerbates the heat, with buildings, concrete pavements, and asphalt roads absorbing and retaining heat more efficiently than natural landscapes. This significantly increases temperatures within the city compared to surrounding rural areas.Increase in Built-up Areas<\/a><\/strong>
The increase in built-up areas in Delhi has been directly linked to its extreme heat. The city’s built-up area has expanded from 31.4 per cent in 2003 to 38.2 per cent in 2022. This urban expansion traps heat, making the city hotter, especially at night.<\/p>\n

Lack of Monsoon Influence<\/strong>
Unlike coastal cities, Delhi lacks the moderating influence of large water bodies, leading to significant heat buildup. The delayed monsoon arrival and dry pre-monsoon months further exacerbate the situation by reducing evaporative cooling.<\/p>\n

Relief in Sight<\/strong>
The weather department expects the heatwave to continue till Wednesday, with some relief anticipated on Thursday and Friday. Monday is expected to be particularly hot, with maximum and minimum temperatures hovering around 45 and 34 degrees Celsius, respectively. Strong surface winds are also expected during the daytime.<\/p>\n
