On Wednesday, Mumbai woke up to cloudy skies and morning rainfall across various parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a cloudy sky with potential heavy rain and issued a yellow alert for Mumbai for today and tomorrow. Neighboring cities like Raigad and Ratnagiri will also be under yellow alert conditions until June 23. The IMD has forecast rainfall and cloudy conditions in Mumbai over the coming week, with varying intensities from heavy to light showers.<\/p>\n

The IMD bulletin stated that conditions are favorable for the further advance of the Southwest Monsoon into more parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and the Northwest Bay of Bengal, as well as parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and regions of Bihar and Jharkhand over the next 3-4 days.<\/p>\n

Currently, a cyclonic circulation is present over the Northeast Arabian Sea adjoining Saurashtra at lower and middle levels, and another over the Westcentral Bay of Bengal adjoining Coastal Andhra Pradesh at lower tropospheric levels. Under these influences scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is expected over Gujarat, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada over the next five days. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Konkan & Goa and the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra from June 19-21, and in the Gujarat region on June 20 and 21. <\/p>\n

Monsoon update<\/h2>\n

The IMD mentioned that the country has recorded less rainfall in June compared to its Long Period Average (LPA). As of June 18, 2024, the nationwide rainfall was 64.5 mm, which is 20% below the LPA of 80.6 mm. The monsoon set in over Kerala and northeastern states on May 30, arriving two days earlier in Kerala and six days earlier in northeast India than usual. However, the northward progression of the monsoon has been gradual, covering Kerala, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Goa, Telangana, most parts of South Maharashtra, South Chhattisgarh, South Odisha, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and the northeastern states by June 12. Since then, the monsoon has not much. <\/p>\n
