This prediction follows the extreme heatwave conditions observed in several states, including Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. Parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and northern Madhya Pradesh are also experiencing similar conditions.

Widespread Heatwave Conditions

The IMD noted that nighttime temperatures have remained warm to severely warm in parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, Delhi, UP, and some areas of Rajasthan and Bihar. Maximum temperatures in the plains of North India ranged between 44-46 degrees Celsius, exceeding normal by 5-8 degrees Celsius. Prayagraj recorded the highest temperature at 47.6 degrees Celsius.

WHO Guidelines for Heat Protection

Amid this extreme heat, the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued guidelines to help the public stay safe:Stay Out of the Heat
➤ Avoid outdoor activities and strenuous exercises during the hottest part of the day.
➤ Stay in the shade, as perceived temperatures in the sun can be 10-15°C higher.
➤ Spend 2-3 hours in a cool place daily.
➤ Be cautious of drowning risks and avoid swimming alone.
➤ Stay informed about official heat warnings.Keep Your Home Cool
➤ Use night air to cool your home by opening windows after dark.
➤ During the day, keep windows closed and covered with blinds or shutters.
➤ Turn off as many electrical devices as possible.
➤ Use electric fans only when temperatures are below 40°C. At higher temperatures, fans can heat the body.
➤ If using air conditioning, set the thermostat to 27°C and use an electric fan to make the room feel cooler while saving on electricity.

Keep Your Body Cool and Hydrated
➤ Wear light and loose-fitting clothing and bed linens.
➤ Take cool showers or baths.
➤ Wet your skin with a damp cloth, spray, or wet light clothing.
➤ Drink water regularly, aiming for one cup per hour and at least 2-3 liters per day.
➤ Check regularly on vulnerable individuals, especially those over 65 or with heart, lung, or kidney conditions.

Protect Infants and Children
➤ Never leave children or animals in parked vehicles, as temperatures can become dangerously high quickly.
➤ Avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours and seek shade or stay indoors.
➤ Do not cover an infant stroller with dry fabric; use a wet, thin cloth instead, and combine with a portable fan for cooling.
➤ Dress children in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers their skin, and use wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

Following these guidelines can help mitigate the risks posed by the ongoing severe heatwave conditions across the affected regions.

Source link

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that severe heatwave conditions will persist across many parts of North India.
