The ruling Congress<\/a> in the State on Tuesday announced an increase in prices of milk sold by Nandini<\/a>, a product of the cooperative milk federation (KMF<\/a>) triggering widespread anger as it comes in less than 10 days of steep hike in petrol and diesel prices. The government is said to be working on increasing taxes on liquor<\/a> from July. <\/p>\n

The milk price hike of Rs 2 per litre, a second one in less than a year of the Congress coming to power, has given ammunition to the Opposition BJP<\/a> and JDS<\/a> to attack the government. <\/p>\n

Chief minister Siddaramaiah<\/a> however, defended the hike, saying the state would provide 50 ml of extra milk to compensate for the hike. “Compared to last year, milk production in the state has increased by 15% this time. In previous years, the daily average production of 90 lakh liters by this time has increased to an average of 99 lakh litres. When our government came to power, the daily average of 72 lakh liters of milk was collected in the state…now the production of milk in the state has reached the level of approximately 1 crore liters daily. The KMF has taken this decision in order to buy the milk produced in excess from the farmers and sell it in a way that does not burden the consumers,” he said, in a post on social media platform X.<\/p>\n

The prices of other KMF products such as curd and milk-related items will remain unchanged, said Federation chairman Bhima Naik. Chalking the hike up to the growing cost of milk storage, he said, \u201cAs it is the current harvest season, the storage of milk in all district milk unions is increasing every day and the current storage is close to one crore litres.\u201d The price, he added, was still less, compared to the neighbouring states. <\/p>\n

Leader of opposition R Ashoka, however, said the milk price increase showed the Congress party’s way to taking revenge on voters for its subpar performance in the recent Lok Sabha polls. \u201cThe poor and the middle class in the state are already reeling from the rise in petrol and diesel prices and the skyrocketing prices of vegetables. In such a situation, you [chief minister Siddaramaiah] have once again rubbed salt into the wounds of the poor by raising milk prices<\/a>,\u201d he said in a post on social media platform X. <\/p>\n

BJP state party president BY Vijayendra declared that the Congress had lost the moral power to continue in power. \u201cThis move neither benefits the poor nor improves the livelihoods of farmers who depend on dairy farming and animal husbandry\u2026The BJP\u2019s people-centric struggle will continue until this anti-people government is brought down,\u201d he said on X. The JDS took to X as well, questioning whether the benefits of the increased rates would actually go to milk producers or would line the coffers of the KMF. Blaming the Congress\u2019 guarantee programmes for the hike, the JDS called it a \u201cbumper gift to the people on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Emergency.\u201d
