Amazon<\/a> India has admitted to workplace safety lapses at its warehouse in the National Capital Region. In its submission to the central labour commissioner, the company accepted that there was a violation of workplace safety standards on May 16, 2024, at its Manesar warehouse<\/a> and assured the government of a prompt corrective action.<\/p>\n

In a detailed response to the central labour ministry’s query on the matter, seen by ET, Amazon India said one of the employees at the building did lead a small subset of employees and associates in a pledge after both the breaks had been taken, thinking it to be a motivational exercise for the team. “This was an unfortunate and isolated incident, and a clear violation of our workplace safety standards,” it said in a letter submitted to the government. “Prompt disciplinary action has been taken against this employee,” it said.<\/p>\n

ET has seen Amazon’s response to 10 workplace safety and standard related questions raised by the government after reports emerged its employees were forced to take a pledge that they “will achieve the target, and refrain from using the washroom and avoid drinking water.”<\/p>\n

Amazon had sought a meeting with the labour ministry and the labour secretary Sumita Dawra met the officials of Amazon, dealing in public policy and human resource, on June 21. Dawra sought their response to the alleged inappropriate occupational safety and working conditions at Manesar warehouse of the e-commerce giant.<\/p>\n

As per the Amazon India’s submission, the investigation also determined that such a pledge was not forced to be taken by the employees or associates, and neither were the contents of this pledge enforced at the Manesar warehouse on the day of this incident, or any other day and the employees continued to take breaks. “We take the lessons learnt from this disappointing incident seriously and will double down on our efforts to re-train our managers on workplace health, safety and well-being,” it assured the government.While emphasizing that the company meets international standards related to health and well-being of its workers, Amazon India said it has taken note of the government’s suggestion regarding ramping up its seating capacity and deploying a female nurse at its medical room to cater to the medical needs of women working on night shifts. Its Manesar facility has a headcount of 1842, out of which 1174 are men, 630 are women, and 20 are transgenders.
