The girl’s mother wrote, “My girl child, born in a male body, didn’t choose this life of struggle where she is being bullied and hated for who she is… the recent incident at her school in Assam has shaken the core of our faith in institutions meant to protect and nurture our young… The school, which should be a sanctuary of learning, became an arena of judgement… This is the plight of my daughter, a plight shared by many, often silenced by the shadows of ignorance.”

These words come after the teenager was forced to leave her school following the posting of bikini photos on social media.

The mother criticised the principal of the reputed co-educational school in Guwahati, accusing him of “slandering,” “belittling,” and “mocking” her daughter, targeting her identity. School authorities, however, defended their actions, stating the photographs “expressed vulgarity” and that they had only requested their removal from social media.

As the world celebrated June as Pride Month, the photos, taken during a family vacation on June 9, sparked a conflict between the school and the family.

The family has appealed to CM Sarma for several reforms, including gender-inclusive uniforms and protections against bullying and harassment in schools. The state’s Transgender Welfare Board also brought the matter to the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR), emphasising that “nobody can sexualize a child’s body and a photo.”

On June 26, ASCPCR began hearings, with the girl’s family narrating the incident. “We heard the complainant and will now summon school authorities. After hearing both parties, we will set a specific date and initiate legal action,” said commission chairperson Shyamal Prasad Saikia. As per a TOI report by Kangkan Kalita, the controversy began on June 10, a day after the girl posted the photos, when the school principal called her parents at 9 PM. “Your daughter is disgusting and shameful. Come tomorrow and take her out of my school,” the student’s mother recalled the call. The family chose to transfer her from the school, refusing to “capitulate to infringement on her right to exist.”

The school management asserted that they had supported the 17-year-old student and protected her from bullying. The principal claimed the bikini photos brought a “bad name” to the school and stated that their intention was not to target her but to have the photos removed.

The student’s family, however, alleged that the bikini photos were a pretext to expel her due to her gender. “The school doesn’t find similar photos posted by boys disgusting or shameful. It indicates their sick mentality,” the mother said.

In the letter to the CM, which went viral on social media, the mother wrote, “My daughter, with dreams as vast as the Brahmaputra, has faced discrimination and prejudice. Yet, she stands unwavering, aspiring to contribute to society…”

“The night call from the principal was a stark reminder of the battles we still face. Her social media, a space for personal expression, was scrutinised and slandered. A family pool outing, a moment of innocent joy, was twisted into a weapon of shame just because my daughter wore a bikini,” the letter continued.

The family sought a transfer certificate after the incident to remove her from the toxic environment and demanded a public apology from the school. The girl might have to forfeit an entire academic year due to the mid-session transfer.

State Transgender Welfare Board president Rituparna Neog said, “The school’s view is that the photos were sexually explicit. I have forwarded this to ASCPCR, with the point that nobody can sexualize a child’s body and photos.” Neog is also a member of the National Council for Transgender Persons.

The principal told TOI that their rules prohibit body piercing and tattooing, and posting obscene photos on social media is not acceptable. “We told them they could delete the photos and start behaving properly or withdraw the student from the school,” he said.

“I am delighted that transgenders will now raise their voice for liberty and fairness. They glanced at my photos but failed to acknowledge my academic achievements,” said the student, who passed class X with a 76% aggregate.

Inputs from TOI

Source link

A letter shared by a Guwahati woman to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma highlights a distressing incident involving her 17-year-old transgender daughter.
