His contribution exceeds 50,000 doses of semen, significantly aiding the conservation and proliferation of this indigenous breed known for its dual-purpose utility and resilience.

The Gangatiri breed, native to eastern Uttar Pradesh and western Bihar, is celebrated for its disease resistance and cost-effectiveness. It is well-suited to the region, requiring minimal input costs while producing between 8-10 liters of milk daily from cows weighing 300-350 kg. The National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) registered the genetically improved Gangatiri breed in 2015, potentially enhancing its milk yield further.

Meet Gorakh

Born on January 29, 2014, Gorakh has a verified parentage, qualifying him as a prime donor for producing sexed semen for Gangatiri cows. His contributions are pivotal, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, where 90% of Y chromosomes are removed to facilitate targeted breeding. Utilizing advanced reproductive technologies such as embryo transfer and in vitro fertilization, Gorakh has sired two female Gangatiri calves, born on March 26 and 27 at the government’s Varanasi farm, marking a milestone as the first instance of these technologies being used for this breed in India.

Identified by ID number 287020, Gorakh’s active service is anticipated to continue for at least three more years. His journey began in a gaushala in Mirzapur, born to elite cows Rahu and Pinki. Inducted into the Hapur farm in January 2015, his training for the semen collection program started in August 2019, and by October, his semen was being collected regularly. Gorakh produces over 2,200 doses of semen each month.

Gorakh’s diet

Gorakh’s diet and exercise regimen are meticulously managed to maintain his health and productivity. His daily intake includes 7.5 kg of balanced concentrate, 12 kg of dry fodder, and a premix of essential vitamins, minerals, and probiotics. The farm allocates approximately Rs 30,000 per month for his upkeep.Becoming a sperm donor bull involves a rigorous selection and training process. Bulls initially undergo rearing, with many not meeting physical standards or having low sperm concentration being excluded. The next stage involves training bulls to ejaculate with dummy partners, followed by the collection stage where qualified bulls begin donating sperm. Strict standards apply during semen collection, requiring a sperm count of at least 500 million per ml. Typically, each ejaculation yields 3-4 ml of semen. In a historic achievement during July-August 2023, the Varanasi farm used embryo transfer technology (ETT) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) to produce Gangatiri cows for the first time in India. Four elite females were selected as egg donors based on their verified lactation and parentage records. Gorakh’s sexed semen fertilized the eggs in-vivo, and after seven days, the embryos were flushed from the donor cows and transferred into four recipient cows. Despite not being high-merit themselves, these surrogates successfully carried two pregnancies to term, resulting in the birth of two calves.

Source link

Gorakh, the elite Gangatiri bull at Uttar Pradesh government’s Hapur farm, has emerged as a cornerstone in the genetic enhancement and milk production initiatives of the Gangatiri breed.
