A souvenir shop<\/a> at Chennai airport<\/a> has been revealed as a front for a Sri Lankan gold smuggling syndicate<\/a>, according to a report by The New Indian Express. The shop\u2019s owner, Mohammed Sabir Ali<\/a>, along with seven of his employees, has been arrested for their role in smuggling a whopping 267 kg of gold worth Rs 167 crore over just two months.<\/p>\n

The Mastermind Behind the Shop<\/h3>\n

Ali, a 29-year-old former YouTuber<\/a> known for his channel “shoppingboyz,” was recruited by the syndicate despite having no prior experience running a shop. Sources say a syndicate member from Abu Dhabi paid Rs 70 lakh to help Ali secure the lease for the souvenir shop, Airhub<\/a>, located in the departure lounge of Chennai<\/a> airport.<\/p>\n

The gold smuggling operation<\/h3>\n

Ali and his team were trained by the syndicate to run the smuggling operation<\/a> efficiently. Through their shop, they received gold from transit passengers and passed it on to receivers outside the airport, earning a hefty commission of Rs 3 crore for their efforts over two months.<\/p>\n

However, the scheme came crashing down on June 29 when a Customs official, suspicious of one of the employees, discovered 1 kg of gold powder at the shop. The employee and the transit passenger involved were immediately taken into custody, followed by the arrest of Ali and the rest of his team.<\/p>\n

A clever ruse unraveled<\/h3>\n

Customs officials<\/a> are now investigating how all eight members of the group managed to possess identity cards issued by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), which exempted them from security checks. These identity cards, typically reserved for authorized personnel, allowed them to operate under the radar.<\/div>\n
